Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Are the cheap shakespeare fly rod kits they sale at walmart ok to learn on? I think they are big water fly rods. Do not want to spend alot, on something I might break over my knee

Thanks guys for all your help. Tooty, I plan on learning in back yard first, thats how years ago, I learned to cast and flip a baitcaster. Started with small kids pool, then worked down to 5gal bucket. Now I can flip in a coffee can. David, lots of guys around here use fly rods for spinning reels for crappie and gills, so if things dont workout I have a new gilling rod (haha). Goodthing I have three open lots across the street. Ah at least will give neighbors a good laugh, nothing like watching this fatboy with a long stick.

I've seen a Fly reel / Spinning Reel combo travel pack, I think at Academy.  One rod, either 3 or 4 pieces, not sure on length, power, etc.  Also came with a Fly reel and a Spinning reel.  Not sure if there was line in the package or not.  Can't remember how much is cost, either.

You're just brimming with info, aren't you Allen?

Im sorry, buddy.... too funny! LOL

Thanks Allen. David  you got me some tickled, I almost peed myself

LOL David.

Don't play me at Trivial Pursuit.  I have never been defeated :)

Sportsman's warehouse has a good value 3 wt rod by Okuma that handles and casts well for under 50 bucks, add a Martin reel and Cortland 333 line and you have a fine outfit for under 100.  This rod casts very well and is a pleasure to handle all day.  The outfits at Walmart are all fiberglass rod or composites and quite heavy along with a very soft line that is difficult to cast at times.
