Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I knew the weather was going to be wicked this weekend, so I took the day off thursday and elected to work inside on Saturday.

My first launch was over in Manchac on I 55 between Pontchatoula and Laplace. I moved around a good big more this time, even thogh the little Gamefisher wasnt running right.

That black guy with the bass boat, cool guy, he showed up and we fished pretty close together, I was secretly competing with him. I got the first bass, he didnt get anything for a while. I switched over to sacalait and didnt get anything.

As I usually do, I went for panfish with a jig and cork. Nothing doing.

The sky turned dark so i headed in an hour and a half after launching, then headed to lunch.

On way back I passed by the spillway, and noticed the bass were killing the cockaho minnows on top of water. Pulled over and launched.

No fish. Im telling yall, i threw just about every single lure in my box. The bass were all over the water, the panfish were not biting at all, and the one time I thought I had a sacalait turned out to be a 5 lb gaspergou. that thing almost snapped my sacalait pole.

Anyway, the fish,, were presented every single thing I had and they didnt bite. It was now getting close to the sun going down and thats when the gaspergou hit my Bobby Garland blue and silver Strollr.

Now, the sun was gone just about, and visibilty not good. The bass probably couldnt see anything and were relying on their lateral line to detect movement.

I caught my first bass on a Eel, you know those plastic tadpole looking lures with a diving lip, i think Rebel makes them. About a pound and a half. Caught another one with the green beetle.

I dont got no light, and they ticket us for not have running lights. I end up packing it up and going to head to the bank to leave but then...

'ANCHOR GOT STUCK!!

Its a mushroom anchor, and it latched onto something down there. I couldnt get it out, tried for a while, then just cut the rope.

When i turned toward the boat launch, all these young boys began arriving.

They were in pickup trucks, none of them had a boat. One of them I talked to before . Anyway, the heavier of the dozen made a cast, it was one of those H20 express lures..something like that, i verified later. His first cast he caught a bass about 10 inches long. Second cast he got snagged. this was out in water about 6 feet deep, and I was already at the bank getting ready to pull the 12 ft flat out the water .

The boy takes off all his clothes except his Joe Boxers and starts wading out...dove down and came up with his lure. Those things are $15. Crazy.

I was talking with one of the guys...all of them are from the area, from Norco, and they all been fishing there for years, probably know the place better than I do.

I told them if the cockahos are on top of the water and the bass are hitting them, they wont catch anything till the sun goes down.

I saw them catch two, as i was leaving.

i gotta go buy another anchor.

cockahos. Got any pics?

So, what's a gaspergou?

Too bad about the anchor. Even for a $15 lure I don't know if I'd want to strip down and dive in after it in waters that can hold snakes and gators, especially after sundown :-)

Gaspergou is drum. Cockaho...it looks like the Cordell Spot. Poagies.

Replace anchor with a Cajun Spear Anchor  (see my earlier post) --- they won't get stuck.

I like the spear anchor idea. Another thought is a modified mushroom anchor. You want a lead cored, vinyl coated version..

What you do, is cut the round mushroom head into four equal petals with single cuts from a hack saw. Cut from the outer rim to the center at 12 o'clock, 3, 6, and 9. Then when the anchor snags, the soft lead flukes will bend and release the anchor. Once you've retrieved the thing, bend the flukes back into position.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy with a 5# 'goo, if it's legal. As for running lights - yeah, you gotta have them. Its a universal law, everywhere I know of.

Yeah they sell those anchors cut at 3,6,9, and 12. Gonna try the spear anchor soon as I can get out to Gonzales. Supposed to be going to BR next week so I will go I 10 and stop at Cabelas.

Today went back out there..two bass but the good news is the panfish are coming around. I got one on fly rod but missed him. He was small.

My uncle was with me and asked me put fly rod away because I hooked him in the neck on one cast..not too bad but he said "please put that thing away".
