I fish the Northeast corner of North Carolina called the Albemarle region and I catch the following panfish..Bluegill, Coppernose Bluegill, Shellcrackers (Redear), Warmouth, Redbreasts, Seeds, Crappie both White & Black, Green Sunfish and Fliers......Also have non gamefish White & Yellow Perch.......

We have a variety here in California. More specifically, greenfish, FL strain, coppernose, and a massive hybrid selection. We get a full spectrum here due to the sharing of water that goes all the way to northern California, stopping along various lakes, and the Colorado River via the aqueducts. We would love to have the Condello strain to be part of our waters too. Man, those guys are massive! I would love to work with DFG to reserve a small area of the lake to raise these monsters, and release them into the water little by little to encourage massive population of herculean gills. Bass will not touch these guys at maturity. They will fight like monsters on lines. I would love to genetically splice them with the silver carp genes for massive population reproduction, then the shark's genes for size, longivity, year round activeness, and fight and flight response for pure fighting potentials. I may be creating a deadly genetic monster, but hell, it will be a world of fight with those gills. Still debating since I have all the lab equipment at my disposal..hahahahahaha..Bruce, Tony, care to join me?

I fish ponds, small lakes and the black waters of the Upper Edisto River, in SC. The sunfish I catch are common in the South:

Spotted Sunfish

Bluegill

Redbreast

Warmouth.

In the larger lakes of the region, crappie and perch are not unknown.

I also catch an occasional black bass, along with catfish and bullheads. I actually like to catch the bullheads. They grow to a decent size here, and it's not unusual to catch them in the 2-3 pound class.

There are 2 really good sunfish lakes close to me. Lady bird lake in Austin, and Dunlap in New braunfels

we catch:

Bluegill

redear

redbrast

greens

warmouth

spotted

longears

rio grande cichlid

A selection of hybrids

In NE NJersey at my home lake I have caught Bluegill,Pumpkinseed ,PSXBG hybrids ,Black Crappie ,Yellow and White Perch and yellow Bullheads.Green Sunfish,Redbreast Sunfish  and Rock Bass ,Brown Bullheads can be found in other waters in the area and possibly Warmouth.

Let me clarify what Leo said, since we are in the same area of Southern California.  We have 2 varieties of Bluegill, the "northern" and more common one, then several of our lakes have added the Florida sub-species, the "copperenose" Bluegill (which is my favorite fish!).  We also have a very good Redear Sunfish fishery, a great Black Crappie population, of course the ever present Green Sunfish.  California has a unique sunfish species that is not found in but in maybe 2 other western states, and that is the Sacramento Perch, which looks kind of like a brown, beefed-up crappie.

Here is some of the great variety I have in the areas I fish.....all these fish were caught on live crickets....

Correct me if needed  Jeffrey : Top to bottom /Lft to rt: Large Mouth Bass ,Channel  Catfish,Bluegill,Redear,Flier,Warmouth

I don't have a prize John but you're right on....in North Carolina all sunfish are grouped together for a total daily limit of 30 with a limit of 12 redbreast as part of the 30....I kind of enjoy catching the different species sometimes......

Looks like my species range, too, although crappie and the perches are absent.

I'm only a few hundred miles south of you Jeffrey, so that stands to reason.

Our bag limits are similar on sunnies, too, 30 being the daily max. You must also include those sunfish harvested and used as live bait in the bag limit.

I enjoy all species too Jeffrey!

Variety is indeed cool! A lot of guys in the south call em all 'brim'.
