I had though of that Greg - but tossed the idea when I found out she was one handed. Auto fly reels aren't really for 'hauling in' fish, actually... they are more about fast wind line storage. You have to pull the line out to wind the spring in them so they'll work and that requires two hands. They require nearly the same dexterity as a manual fly reel to use.

But it was a great thought!

all i fish with in the fly reel dept. i prefer them because it takes to long to reel in a manual...do they make a manual with some gear?...and i was taught on automatics. you guys will think im crazy probably but i never fish flies, and fish fly rods offen. i use them for an ultra quiet live bait presentation. thats the norm in my area though. anyway, the older, bigger american made martins will haul in a fairly stout fish. they are by far the most powerful autos ive ever dealt with. ive used all kinds and these are very strong. maybe an option if you can find one. i'll try to dig one up and get a model #

Tomas, Fly rod are a great fishing tool whether you use flies or not!!!!! I never put a fish on the reel I strip them in,the fly reel is just a storage unit for me!!!!!!! Crazy is not a bad way to go, I might be also, There are several schools of thought on my sanity!!!!   :-)(-:

I think your best bet is to contact on of the veteran's groups that take injuried vets fishing for there advise. I do remember that as a kid, I could fish a cane pole one handed no problem. That is what Tenkara fishing is basicly about.  Fishin' Jimmy  aka  Jim Ducy

Thank Yall for input!!!!! I was thinking about the reeling in of the fish!!!! You are right David it is a two handed operation after I suggested this I remembered rigging one up for a friend. I had rope burns from getting it spooled on, I am sure there was a better way to do it. He thought I knew what I was doing!!!!! LOL

Sounds like Dick has found what he was looking for!!!!!!

Hello from Australia,

I use a fly rod for most of my freshwater fishing along with two automatic fly reels that I bought on ebay recently--a Heddon and a Southbend. Great little reels and I love using them, especially in the small creeks that I mostly fish. I like how I can strip some line, cast, adjust the length with my little pinky then fish one handed until I move to the next spot.

Cheers,

Steve
