Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Haven't fished in a while but the water is cooling. Where do I start fishing? Method?

Thanks Guys

I wanna say to fish for them in much the same places you did in early summer. This means the usual haunts near deeper water, like weeds, wood and rocks. Morning and late afternoons are the prime times.

As far as I understand it, they are moving into shallower waters again, as the water experiences Autumns cooling overturn. They also remain suspended around deeper structure, near to the shore as they did during the summer.

But bottom line is, they are moving again for a month or two, before the winter cold drives them back deep.

This is what I recall from reading about it - Im no expert for sure.

Charlie, David about summed it up. Good post. Also, you know Bluegill is where you find them so if you don't get bites pretty quick it's time to move on and try a little deeper or shallower..Good fishing and tight lines..
Lots of gills coming off wood cover and floating docks(anchored off shore)deeper shorelines are target areas.32nd oz. feather ,marabou or Bucktail Jigs tipped with crawler pieces or Twister tails are really banging them consistently. Fewer but bigger gills will hit #2 Spinners and 1/6th oz. Flash King Wobbler spoons meant for Crappie.
Look for structure Charlie. Fallen trees and drop offs alng the points.
Charlie I would think your talking about clear water situations taking into consideration of your local. I would say to you to start at the old bedding area's and start to work your way out to deeper water with the emphases being on structure. Maybe the outside weed edge, maybe wood, anything that may change the bottom contour rocks, sunken islands. Once you have established that then you will have to clue in on depth. Fish may be on the bottom if not start to work your way up the water

col-um for suspended fish. Now you have to find the right bait and when you put all that together be prepared to get your line stretched. Hope this helps you.

We have had about 18 inches of rain the past month and fish are in shallow and feeding in flooded brush and green growth that emerged throughout the summer, but is now covered over with water. I actually wet-waded for them today and it was quite comfortable. Hope this helps...use live baits to get them...worms and waxies below bobbers in the shallow flooded stuff if this is the case in your area. Hairjigs tipped with bait, too.

Good luck!

This is a really good explanation, Jim, of how variation in the fishes environment can prove to be productive. It says to me that we must not only be aware of the usual "wood, weeds and rock" formations, but to also think like a fish. They go where the food is and that often means those micro biotopes that appear... and soon fade away.

Keep sharp!
