Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

       Hi All,

Name is Brian R. Brennan and I am a diehard ultra light lure angler from New Jersey, I Target all kinds of species bluegills are near the top of the list. I have a serious tackle addiction, use G. Loomis rods matched to Daiwa ultra light reels from Japan. I have tried so many other reels that let me down and so the Japanese imports. I mainly fish lures like the Berkley Power grub, Charlie Brewer Slider grub, Bass Pro Shops Spring grub and Stanley Wedge tails. I rig them in either 1/16oz or 1/8oz Lunker City ultra light jigheads. I am also a fan of small crankbaits and minnow baits. To many to list. LOL.

I fish from a Ranger 619VS multi species boat with a Evinrude 200 Etec H/O. I also have a older model Tracker Pro Guide 16. I got it for free and refurbished it. I live to fish and it makes my job as a police officer easier to handle. I enjoy talking about fishing almost as much as doing it.

I have spent quite a few days lately on a local 50 acre pond that has a huge population of gills, crappie and LM Bass. Today was the best day so far. 101 gills, 8 LM Bass and one crappie. Lures used were power grub in Melon Pepper, Slider grub in Watermelon/Chartreuse, Kalins grub in Arkansas Shiner and a Rapala coundown size 01 in Hot muddler.....Awesome day on the water. All fished released to fight another day.

I was just informed by my better half that my introduction made me sound like an elitest tackle snob! Believe me that was not my intention at all. I have a problem that demands high end gear but I just love fishing for panfish. So please don't be turned off by the gear. I enjoy hearing about crickets and red wrigglers under a float too. I am just a big fan of artificals, i hope i did not turn anyone off.

Welcome Brian. The great thing about bluegill fishing is every state in the lower 48 produces and there are just as many favorite ways to catch them. Good to hear from Jersey with all the recent flooding! Nice looking boats as well. If you truly love bluegill fishing then you're sure to be hooked on Bigbluegill.com....
I have been on Vacation since before the Storm, had 3 good days on the water before the Storm hit.....Got ordered into work on Sunday. I actually was dumb enough to head out the Monday after the storm to my local bluegill/crappie hot spot. The water was off colored but not muddy. My friends thought I was nuts but I did end up with 40 fish in like 3 hrs of fishing. Had great days everyday after leading up till an off day yesterday. Had a great day today!!! My nephew/godson is on his way up so we are going to hit the lake next two days .......
Welcome, you will love this site..
LOL. I'm sure you didn't turn anybody off :-). We're pretty low key 'round here. We're VERY excited to have you in our group.
Welcome Brian!  If you want to learn more about panfish, you are going to really enjoy this great website.  Bunch of very nice, knowledgeable, fishermen and fishergals here from across the U. S..
Wish I had some good weather here in Tenn. Getting rain from Lee that has pushed northward. Of course I'm on vacation this week with friends here from Indiana. Friends three day license started today, maybe we will get a break from the rain this afternoon.
Welcome Brian, this sounds like you will love the forum and website...

Welcome Brian

As others have mentioned, this site is a great resource for freshwater fishing information. I have learned a lot about not only bluegill but a host of other species.

I am also a jig and ultralight addict and will look forward to hearing about fishing in NJ.

Great boats Brian! I have two UL Daiwas that need new bail springs and a light Penn reel that also needs a bailspring.Thinking of taking them to Fairfield Tackle on RT 46 .A buddy told me they are Penn and Daiwa dealers .Where do you take your reels for repair? I live in Ringwood NJ a Passaic County border town to Sloatsburg NY . It's minutes from the Monksville Reservoir and Greenwood Lake.

   John,

I sadly use very high end reels imported from Daiwa Japan. So when they need service I have to fed ex them to Japan. I have used Fairfield Tackle in the past and I bet they still do an amazing job. I know the Ringwood area well, my sister used to live in Franklin Lakes and I have fished Greenwood Lake for many years. Maybe we could go panfishing there together one day.

                                                                                                               Brian

When I had my Pike Attacker 25hp Merc boat back in the early 90s I fished Greenwood and Hopatcong some with the Hawg Heaven  club out of Vernon. Would be great to fish together and I would happily take you in my humble electric motor powered boat on Cupsaw lake ! Ever fish Waywayanda ,Monksville Reservoir and Turtle pond ?
