i caught my biggest bluegill with corn
Yes, also pieces of bacon, bread, cat food, and chicken liver. They're not picky if they're hungry. Had people catch them on the pearl button from they're shirt when they ran out of bait. Have seen the same done with yellow perch.
Hotdogs work great for channel catfish - I can attest after fishing corn for 4 hours on a spot another local angler came up to the pond as I was packing up.
I fed the spot with ground bait for that time and there was lots of activity. I caught 3 channel catfish and 38 bullheads on corn. By the way- never stock bullheads if you have a chance very capable of population booms in any pond. I'm no stocking expert, I just know they put these fish in for the kids and a little go a long way. Yikes.
When the new angler whipped out a half a hot dog, I kind of chuckled, but told him to try on the spot where I was feeding (60 feet out).
Within 5 minutes he landed a channel catfish on that chunk-o-dog. The oils off that bait attract the cats - meow! I am a believer.
Do you suggest cooking the hot dog first, or just using them straight from the package?
No - don't cook the dog. It is the oils the fish seeks and the protein scent. Cooking will reduce its effectiveness. On my last white bass trip, I did fish at night for some cold water carp & catfish. We use nearly the same baits.
Here is a fish we caught at night up in the center of Wisconsin. I have a bigger carp we landed but don't have the pictures back from that camera yet. We used the ground bait attractant with some sliced hot dogs in the bait and for the hook bait.

I don't cook them and use a slant cut and double hook the hotdog piece .Stays on hook well for casting .Have caught Bullheads from 6-14 inches and Channels 24-29 inches . 29" Channel cat is 10 lbs and Hotdog pieces or Chicken liver /Hot Dog piece combo works great! If you use the chicken liver ,put that on first and then block it on the hook with the slanted hot dog double hooked piece so it stays on .The blood from the livers is quite an attracter I believe and the scent of the hot dog too.

If you do cook the hot dog just do it in a micro wave for a little bit to toughen the skin.I'd rather not do this but some guys do and have sucess. I like the slant double hook cut to keep it on the hook.

i have. when my dad was a kid, he would do that because people would just throw stuff like that in to feed the fish. "They never thought twice before bighting" my dad said. i Guess it would work. he told me this like a month ago. i just forgot. I HAVE HEARD OF THIS. still havent tried it. :-) (hot dog he used)
I've only heard of using hot dogs for catfish, corn for carp or trout.
Just put corn under a bobber and hang on
I'd eat the smoked sausage .
John W. may be in disagreement with you on this Robert .See his comment above. He suggests not cooking the dog ... you may have a point about nuking it' just a little to toughen skin but it seems to me some of the juices will dry up if you do .I opt for not nuking but slicing on an angle and double hooking so as to stay on the hook. This works good and a cast doesn't fling it off the hook.
Me and my dad use hotdogs at the pond down the street from the house and absolutely slay the bluegill and bullheads
