Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Seems to me this idea has been done here before but I searched "Unusual Catches' and it came up empty .I'll post one now and more another time. I would like to see what folks think of as an "Unusual Catch " and see the diversity of photos of their fishing events. This Fish hit a huge spoon and was caught in the mouth . Is it an "Unusual Catch " ? I think so. Unusually Aggressive!

This fish really does resemble a longear but doesent have the markings of a Longear .Unless I'm totally wrong it's a Redbreasted Sunfish .It was caught in NE NJ in the Wanaque River.

Those longears are very fiesty and a ball to catch. The first time I saw one of their beds, I thought it was a bass bed. I was on a high bank and looked out to see several large dishpan size beds. I cast to one of them and was rewarded with a nice longear. I caught several from those beds, releasing them all for another days fight. It was a great memorable day many years ago.

Good ol' Rebel lures .I once had a bonanza fishing a seawall in Saint Croix.Using  an old Rebel Blue Back I snagged out of a lake while trolling and I still have ,I caught some great Yellowtail Snappers in the 2,1/2-3 lb. range.Strong fish on 6LB test and an Eagle Claw 4 piece whip of a packrod.I also caught a huge needlefish or Gar or something of that sort .I really dont know what it was .Well, I hade a wire leader on that Rebel and never lost the lure . Wish I had pics of that old adventure!

John, it's a basic silver w/ black back, but it has a cross-hatched scale pattern on it.  Nowadays, they are a mirror-finished chrome w/ black back.  I don't know if Rebel discontinued it, or if Wally World just doesn't carry that particular color.

No argument needed. More of the interesting events we face at out water bodies. I was trolling in the deep areas, 16ft to 32ft, near the surface with the rapala, with the max depth of it sinking down to was 4ft, yet got hammered repeatedly. Everytime, I thought the small bass got it..yet..the gill ended up on the hook.

Not to argue Leo my friend but how often does that happen .I understand that the small Gills will get hooked once in a while as they are chasing a bait away but I suspect more often they dont get hooked and landed.

This shiner( the only one I ever caught on a lure this size )was hooked right in it's tiny mouth.I suspect it was chasin not feeding but I dont really know .With such a small mouth I figure they dont eat big fish the size of my lure here but plankton and small organisms.
