What Daniel George said, use a smaller hook. I almost always use a #6 tru turn hook for bluegill.

Them gills went to "school". I fish soem gills around here who also go to school. They seem to know how to get the bait of the hook w/o gettting caught.

The bait you are using makes a big difference, I use crickets most of the time. With crickets you can't really throw it out and let it set, I fish with crickets anywhere from 1 foot - 3 foot deep using a boober. I will slowly bring it back toward me a little crank at a time, when the bluegill hits it they really help you set the hook. Using worms is good and you don't get striped as much, night crawlers are tough and very hard to get off, using worms and night crawlers you can cast out and let it set.
