12,000 gills a summer
60 Replies

I ran into a fella while getting my car fixed and the conversation turned to fishing. He told me that he and three buddies took 12,000 bluegill out of a local lake last year. He further stated that…Continue

CAUGHT 30-35 EVERY DAY, BUT DON'T GO BEFORE 3:00!

Yep ,that's what was told to my fishing partner by a fly fishing buddy of his. So off we go, figuring there's a lie in here somewhere. We decide to go at 1:00 and lo and behold who's flyfishing with his buddy, the 35 gills a day friend! We fished for 3 hours using every fly and technique we could think of. Ended up with five gills, 1-nine, thirty short of our goal. The guy who told us, and his partner, caught 1. We ran into him at the boat ramp and layed it to him. As it turned out, it was…

big change in temp.

What is the best way to catch gills when the temperature changes fro the 30s to the 60s. I would think downsizing to a ice jig on fly rod might take a few. Any ideas?I've never had a situation like this in many years.

Let's Get Reel With Photos

I would really rather see a photo of the true size of the fish than a photo that's manipulated to look larger. Put a ruler, pack of smokes etc..to make it real.I'm sure very few members do this but at first I believed everything I saw and invited friends to look at some of the giants.I was beaten soundly for my efforts. Call me gullible!

Winded out

Had boat ready for lake and fly fishing for the big ones. Twenty MPH winds and rain. May still go around 11:00.

Everybody have a great weekend!

Hey Thomas...not a lot of mystery in jig fishing, but often people use gear that is just too heavy. A standard would be ultralight spinning rods of 6 feet and a smooth open-faced reel with a good drag system. The heaviest line I use is 4 lb test Trilene extra limp for easy casting. This year, I have used Trout magnets 4 lb SOS line and 2 lb test as well. Also, I like Tripple Fish 4 pound mono, made in Germany and available through Road Runnner folks.

You can suspend jigs below bobbers at various depths or gently work or hop them on the bottom with a piece of worm for a tipping bait. Strikes may be light, so a sensitive graphite rod is in order. I agree with Zig's philosophy, and that is to start with a 1/64 th oz jig and work up or down until you find the right size they are hitting. Even big gills take small lures and baits the majority of the time. Those giants at Richmond Mill hit just like any other gills I have caught...with a feather touch.

Good Luck!

Thomas...as I was growing up in a small town in N.C. crawfish was then and still is my top live bait and alot of time its my artificial lure choice as well. When I was young we moved to N.C. and my grandmother took me fishing ALOT and showed me all her tricks and spots at Waccamaw River. Sometimes we used crickets, most of the time we used small to medium size crawfish! We just hook them thru the tail about 1/2" up or slide the hook just under its shell and then tie the line on. (Be careful with sliding under the shell to not go to deep and kill them.) Trick is..keep them alive! Now at Waccamaw River we fished on bottom with an egg sinker about two feet up from the bait so the crawfish could move around. Every now and then pull it a bit in case it finds a hiding spot. Or we would cast out and drag it across the bottom back in. We would catch monster bluegill or as grandma called 'em,blue bream. We also caught red bream(biggest bluegill and red bream..lots over 2 pnds!),warmouth and even the catfish, black fish and the bass ate 'em up!! Go with larger crawfish and could get monster catfish(biggest cat out of waccamaw river i caught with live crawfish was 37 pnds!!) and bigger black fish and bass as well.(Biggest bass with live crawfish was over 12pnds! I was 12 yrs old!)
I have never stopped fishing since! I have grown up and moved away but I have tried and done the same live crawfish bait and teq...it has ALWAYS paid off. I have even used live crawfish on a slip bobber..let set just off bottom and BAM!! My son and I just last weekend fished a pond and put live crawfish on bobbers only 'bout 4' under and we tore big bluegills and bass up!! So try different things...no telling what might work and just may surprise you! Here is something to remember...90% of fish that I catch(from down south and from up North)that I have cleaned have had crawfish in their belly!! Make live crawfish one of your top choices, you will catch fish, and in most cases bigger fish.

Thomas, We had a family of Swanks in the town I grew up in Keithsburg, Illinois. Henry Swank name comes to mind. No negative recolections at all with the name Swank. Any niceuns I get on are usually in Southeast Iowa as it is MUCH better managed than Illinois waters. Mike Searl--aka--Illinoisgiller---aka ole giller on BluegillTalk.com.
