Coldwater/Warmwater Bluegill

Being a fisherman from southern California, where is rarely gets under 40 to 50 degrees in the dead of winter, why do the Blue gill in our lakes here stop biting when we have this cool weather? It is Very hard to even locate them! Most of the lakes and ponds in the northern states freeze over from freezing temperatures, yet you have great Bluegill fishing through the ice. Cold water is cold water, no matter where it is right? Well, Bluegill are Bluegill in any area too right? So how come us… Continue

Hey Jeff...we weighed several fish on a Mainstays Digital Kitchen scale that weighs to the 1/100 th of a pound. We had two fish that were right on the 2 lb mark with just a smidge over.We were on a boat and couldn't perfectly level the scale, so it was good enough for me. Several others, many others, went from 1.5 to 1.85 lb. region.

From what I have seen, the fish in Perris are the heaviest per skeletal length I have ever seen or heard of, surpassing the Richmond Mill gills routinely for relative body weights. I caught a 12 incher down there on a #3 Mepps that did not reach the 2 pound mark.

Hey Jeff I saw a thread with you saying you could give someone a recommendation on a mount (this would be a fish I caught in 1992 I have a bad picture) but I do have measurements...this means a lot to me, being the biggest Bluegill I've caught and I was eleven at the time :) any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jeff the Taxy that mounted my fish is a local young lady here in our little south Georgia town. She's done a Crappie for me also and he's awsome also!!

Hey Jeff...are you guys getting some of those fish on Sonny's, 'Ledheds' jigs? We just traded some out with each other and I am having good success with some of his patterns...they are excellent!

Ike works best. That was my first trip to DVL. All the panfish we caught were small like the one in the picture. If you want bull gills, go to Skinner or Parris, both are not very far from DVL. We were up there after catfish.

Here is one we caught last spring in his full breeding colors! Here you can see why they call them red spotted sunfish!
