Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Couple boys Fish the pond today told them to take all the cats they wanted. Fish were between 20 to 24 inches. Boy's caught 8. Young man on the left is Tucker and the young man on the right was Dan. Both love to fish. Hope they have a good year fishing.

Sorry I didn't think to check the T-shirts out. I'll be a little more observant next time.

Catching that many small bass while bluegill fishing is a really good sign for your bluegill.  It means that very possibly your bass are overpopulated, which is the ideal state for a pond being managed for big bluegill.  Don't keep any of them - they'll keep your small bluegill thinned out so the few that survive past fingerling stage will have many times more food per fish, and will grow exponentially faster than in a pond in which the bluegill are crowded.

You probably have very few, if any, large bass - but that's the way you want it if your goal is big bluegill.

Walt I caught 8 bas yesterday while fishing for gills. Fish were 8 to 12 inches. Like I said I've never seen any but I don't know how a pond can be 15 years old with no large bass. I'm really going to try to clue in on the bass to see if I can find any larger ones.

You actually don't want big bass in a pond you're managing for big bluegill, because that usually means there aren't enough small bass.  Do you regularly catch bass in the 10-12" range?  If so, you're in good shape.

Don't know if I have any big bass Walt as far as I know probably the biggest is a couple pounds. I have had bass in there for 15 years never saw anything big which don't mean there not in there just that I haven't seen them. I know I have a lot more cats to come out.

Hey Dick wheres the pics of that great new tube? No voyage on that great pond yet? Heres a tip when putting on your fins put each hook up to the inside not on the outside of the fins. Makes it alot easier when putting them on & taking off.
