Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I am very proud of the state I live in, as I know all of you are proud of yours. When most people think of Oklahoma, the first thing that usually comes to mind are all those old dust bowl pictures. That time and experience is very much a part of who we are as Oklahomans but our immensely diverse state is so much more. This is a photo at the Blue River in South-central Oklahoma... one of my favorite fishing locations. NOT what most folks picture when they think of my home state.

Greg... You need to come down this way and we can go chase some of those Blue River beasts! I know how tough it is to leave what you have up there though. PL must be running over the dam and fishing great this year.

Mark... This has GOT to be the greenest August on record... at least in my reckoning. All of our lakes and rivers are brim full and the shorelines look fantastic.

Ray... That's a photo of a side channel. The Blue River is a moderate size water course for Oklahoma. No where near as big as our major five; the Red, the Arkansas, the Cimarron, the Grand and the Washita.

John... During the winter, the Blue River is one of the seven put-and-take Rainbow Trout fisheries in Oklahoma. During the Spring and Summer it is heavily stocked with 18-20" Channel catfish in certain pools. Pretty easy to fill a creel with eater size fish all year.

Bruce... As my friend Greg said, we have two very good year round trout fisheries with Rainbow and Brown trout. These are both tail-water fisheries. One is below Tenkiller Dam on the Illinois River, the other is below Broken Bow Dam on the Mountain Fork River. Both of these river systems have fantastic native Smallmouth fisheries above the reservoirs and UNBELIEVEABLE White Bass runs in the spring... we call them Sand Bass around here. Oklahoma is becoming known as a destination for trophy size catfish and Lake Texoma has always been famous for Striped Bass. We have Walleyes and Saugeyes aplenty and most of our southern lakes have Florida strain Largemouth Bass. Up near Greg, in Ponca City, we even have a self sustaining population of Northern Pike. Then there are the fun oddball fish like Chain and Grass Pickerel, Pirate Perch, Fliers, Red River Pup Fish, Killifish, pure strain Saugers, Paddlefish, Mooneyes, Goldeneyes and Bowfin. Oh... and FOUR different species of Gar. Oklahoma is where all the species of the North meet those from the South and those from the East mingle with the ones from the West. I can drive an hour or two in any direction and fish anything from prairie cricks and ponds, huge reservoirs, Ozark streams and limestone rivers. As Greg said, Oklahoma is VERY diverse.

That is a nice little creek. Too bad that is not what all of OK looks like. Of course the same could be said of IN and TN as well as many other states.
