Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This was inspired by the creature from the popular Sci-Fi movie, "Alien." That sucker gave me nightmares for years, so here's my tribute to it.
It is a #12, tied this AM, while it was raining.

I've been trying to do a couple of things, lately:
1. Focus on proportion
2. Figure out how to use the different types of hen hackle/neck feather I've collected.

1. This has a traditional 2x2 proportion ratio:
Tail = 2x hook shank
Wing = 2x hook shank
Body = 2x wrap.
[ [ Aside from the tail, it is also tied in the traditional English fashion for wet flies - from the front. This is in contrast to the more common rear-focused methods.] ]
2. This uses a guinea neck feather, not the usual sort of hackle type.

It is tied on a dry fly hook, to which I added a slight "humpback," using round nose pliers. Tying on was done in the order of the listed materials, below -

* Hook: Umpqua #12 dry fly
* Tail: 10 Guinea hen neck feather barbs.
* Body: Red floss. Tied in at front, wound to end of barb and back.
* Thorax: Medium black chenille - 2x wraps (I'd like to also try black Ice Dub or black Krystal Chenille)
* Wing: 10 Guinea hen neck feather barbules.
Tied atop the hook shaft to flare proportionally to either side of the head.
* Head: Thread and 2x whip finish, 2x cement coat to form glossy bead.

I don't know if it will catch fish, but it looks a treat to my eyes!

Thanks fellas. As I've gone down the path researching fly designs, I came to the notion that I needn't reinvent the wheel. The things that make a fly...
A. Look good
B. Fish good
... have been sorted out a long time ago. All I needed to do was stumble over them. It was the connection to English wet flys that got the wheels spinning.

I like it David and bet the fish will too! Good job! I think sometimes less is good when tying a fish catching fly, and this one looks like a winner.

MC SCRUFF , BEFORE I EVEN read you description I was impressed by the proportions on this fly. Just plain looked great to me !!!!!!! This one again reminds me of classic English patterns of days gone by , GREAT TIE BUDDY ..........
