I've always released them also, no reason to kill them that I could see.  They'll be bigger next time, and so agressive.

Many folks eat them down in Louisiana Steve but I've never tried them......I've heard everything from taste good to bloody and strong......I personally don't know.......I release the ones I catch because I believe they help balance the predator/prey ratio........I catch big bluegill and Bowfin together every year down here on the Albemarle......

Very violent from the instance of hook set......often coming completely out of water.......wrapping up your neighbor's line too sometimes......they often free themselves by breaking light terminal tackle or slacking the line by so much erratic movement and spitting the hook......usually with a landing net....hard if not impossible to pick up and swing in....exciting few moments on a panfish trip!
