Amen! Been there, suffered that, and went through it.

I would suspect quite a few too .Hunger is the mother of Invention.

Answer: Quite a few. Especially families that don't use disposable diapers, or have old folks. Plenty..

I wonder how many families on the earth can't afford hooks but can find a discarded safety pin and catch a fish?

It's one way to keep our minds at full alert, not only teaching ourselves the skills (or relearning the skills from the masters), but passing down the knowledge, wisdom, and skill-sets to the younger generations that truly want to learn. We must be a responsible generation.

John, a sweet challenge indeed. Will match your challenge this spring. Report back. I'll make two safety pin hooks for regular usage, while making two with a nymph fly outfit. Willing to share the experiment?

I am just gonna have to catch a Bluegill on a safety pin "hook" from the bank come Spring now to feel like a real survivor! My mom 'hooked' me up with  a safety pin when I was a kid but I dont ever recall catching anything on it .

What's a safety pin? LOL My mom left me half naked on the bottom all day long until I was able to wear pants without pissing and pooping it them at 1.5yrs of age. We do use a pin to hold things in place..which resembles much of the bobby pins of today. Otherwise, safety pin was a rare thing in our country..back then. But a safety pin is a great thing to have as a multi-purpose tool. Got quite a few at home from wife's arts and crafts closet.
