Yes David , I use the 'Hildebrandt' and 'Joe's Flies' brands .I have several and my favorite is the Hildy  'June Bug' which worked a charm on Brown Trout one day a few years ago .Gills and other pannies like them .I add some sort of a fly or plastic terrestrial  to the Hildy .The Joes flies come with their own fly attached . I would like to make my own and I'm not that crafty but would like to be . BTW .although I like the size 3.5 bladed 'Joe's Flies', the wire seems to be poor grade and rots easily . Hildys are made better but I have not found them in that 3.5 size I have best success with .

I'm curious - have you tried the in-line jig spinners? Hildebrandt makes the best one, often called the "Idaho Spinner," by fly fishing folks. You can ask ale your own from wire and round nose pliers, since you're crafty.
Years ago I used them, adding salmon eggs to the hook. They are straight, safety-pin versions of the Beetle Spin... a "hard wire" version of your mono rig. Add a Baot holder hook and the worms stay on nicely.
I'm thinking they might encourage a tighter tie job, too, in case you were inclined to be a bit lazy one day.... :-)

Great black crappie there John.

Oh no, not the little Johnson spoon!
I hoard them!
I use the Trilene on terminal hooks. I've seen it rated as high as 90% breaking strength. That's good for what is an easy tie.

Thanks David . I broke off  a Bass last week  due to not checking my line and retying after catching a bunch .He jumped so I got to see the skinny 2 pounder .Took a favorite Johnson weedless spoon . The 10th oz gill sized one !  I get careless sometimes .The double improved clinch I use for beetle spins and other spinner baits but maybe I should use it in more instances .

Alternatively, try a Trilene Knot, aka doubled improved clinch.

Tooty ,I need to learn to tie a snell .I think the hook didn't break but slipped out of the eye .Need to be more careful tying!
