Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I was fishing solo at first light when the big 26" Channel hit and that proved costly to my telescopic pole since I didn't have a net guy....This is the same 12 foot wonderpole that I showed the other day.......it can be replaced...

No worries David.....one of my grandpas had a two acre pond dug for his 20 plus grandchildren.....filled it up with channel cat and we loved getting together on Sundays growing up in Louisiana and wetting a line there.....he also grew some bluegill to 11" in other ponds but I always enjoyed catching those cats at Monroe's pond....miss those days!

Tony is spot on. The species have been proven to have one of the longest memory ingrained into their brain once they've learned or acquired something. We have huge, and I mean, huge monster kitties at our water bodies. It's so rare to catch the same one again using the same kind of baits that they were caught. I got lucky and held onto my pole for dear life as I was dragged clear across the lake's side because I caught a BG, and the kitty got a hold of that BG. Great day out to say the least.

Absolutely. Among pond managers, it's common practice to remove Channel cats as they are caught. The reason?  They are so wary, It can be difficult to get them to bite again once they have been caught and released.

M catfish are very interesting creatures. I have several books about them, and have compiled a lot of information. I have a peculiar fascination with them.
they are not at all the dull, stupid brutes most people think they are.

Wow! True destructive power in those kitties. They should be known as hidden lionhearts.

My favorite size for the table are the little 1 to 2 pounders David.....I've eaten many bigger cats living and fishing spots like Santee Cooper but I gave this fish a pass.....as it turned out I caught several good eaters later in the day so it turned out to be a win/win....

I can relate. I had a Shimano rod break like that last year. Disappointment.
But like you I had another....
Hand lined the fish? I love it. Quick thinking and not much else you can do. I've done
it myself, when faced with various "technical difficulties" (which are inevitably My fault).
Did you keep the fish?

Disappointment for a second until I realized the top piece with the line still attached was at my feet in the boat so I first grabbed the other piece of the pole and went for the line which isn't the smartest thing to do but I was determined to get a picture of the culprit so I hand lined it to the surface and got the net on it......Then my thoughts shifted to hoping my local store had another wonderpole that I could purchase......I just grabbed one of ten others that I keep on my boat ready to go with all types of baits and set ups.....
