Going to try to fish this region late this afternoon if Mother Nature allows me to! Bound to be a few more footballs in there....

I released him hoping someone might feel the thrill again......He fought pretty good so even if he's done growing he'll be a nice catch......

A Bluegill's eyes will typically grow at a constant rate throughout its life, even when the fish in question is part of a stunted population. If you find a small Gill' with large eyes, what that probably means is that's an older fish who simply didn't get enough to eat when it was younger, never reaching its full potential.....stunted. There are exceptions of course, which is why examining body condition is important also.

My take on Jeffrey's photo is that it's an older, mature fish, that may not get much bigger, due to life expectancy.

Here's a three year old fish that has eaten well it's entire life. The eye is noticeably smaller, especially when compared to its body. A sign of fast growth.

This fish has an incredibly small head for that nice full body, yet has the large eyes of a juvenile....
