I have one of those. Not as a great producer as the real thing. We try to climb some of the trees near the river here, apparently, the tree only grow in the river's bed. Chance of us getting bitten by snakes, spiders and other poisonous creatures are high. However, the live ones are the best bait. Even better than earth worms. Something about the chemical compounds in the body fluids.

Don't forget this one is available in an artificial too.....not nearly as productive as the real thing, though!

Catalpa worm  are right at the top of bluegills favorite food, and I have a tree in my yard but because they spray for mosquitos the worms don't show up, but the years they do  they get to go fishing with me. The way I store them is to freeze them in a jar with cornmeal in it , that way you can have Catalpa worms all year ,bet it would come in handy for ice fishing       LOFR

While picking up equipment this morning I spotted these from the road....didn't want to barge into someone's front yard, so I stopped and snapped a couple photos from the road. I have never seen a Catalpa down in the deep woods, always in an open area, such as a fence row or pasture. These were no exception.

Thanks, Dick! The pods are a distinguishing feature - if they're still there throughout the summer you can spot the tree. Still haven't seen any locally, though.

We caught bruiser gills at Virginia's Lake Prince when I was 9 years old on these! Great bait!

The seed pods may not fall off till winter when they turn brown and ripen.

Thanks, Dick, for the info. Everything you said I read while researching the tree.
How long did the seed pods remain on the tree?
