Good way to start the year!

I bought some Thill "Shy Bite" floats (just about 2" long) and find they work great with the fly rod.

Nice one.  And yes, it is hard to pick out those bites when there is wind and a good chop on the water.

Fixed float. I seldom fish deeper than 7-8 ft for bluegills, as many of our lakes and ponds in my region aren't much deeper than that. Even in the middle of the winter, I found out decades ago that a fixed float and tiny baits would catch them in 36-38 degree water. But with anything deeper than 6 ft I go to a 9 ft Shimano Convergence rod and 2 pound test.

These fish were very close to the shoreline today...just 20 feet out, and only a couple of the 61 fish I caught took the bobber completely under. Tha last three guys I have taken there have not caught fish because they could not accurately identify a strike from the fish. My float is just shy of nuetral bouyancy and goes under very easily. Still, the gills are often just taking and holding the bait...not goin anywhere. 25 mph winds make it tough, too!
