Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

First gill to fall. Not a whopper, but that ain't the point! (that's the story I'm going with)
The other pattern, Orange Foam Spider, also got hits.... but no hookups.

Thanks, Dick.

For all my talk and experimentation, I'm pretty much a traditionalist. I like colors that mimic nature, with a few exceptions. This means the following:

Black/Blue/Purple

Silver/Gold

White

Brown

Green

Red

Yellow/orange

Chartreuse and its cousins

I also tend to believe that CONTRAST is more important than absolute color. We know that fish see much as we do, but that water "washes out" out colors as we know them pretty quickly. So, I typically, combine my palette to take advantage of the contrast angle as much as absolute color.

If you think back to the lures that caught fish before "we knew so much," you didn't see the lurid, even flagrant, colors available today. That speaks volumes to me.

Again, while I like to imagine I'm pretty smart, I reckon I don't need to reinvent the wheel in at least 80% of cases. Occasionally, something unique may appear and be proven to make a difference. Some are ven game changers. But the burden of that proof is on the user. Call me skeptic.

For most of what I do, give me the tried and true colors.

Wise decision David with the main emphasis on black and you might want to consider some brown.

I'm already plotting my next tie. I'm gearing up to
turn out some "Bully's Bluegill Spiders," as made famous
by Terry and Roxanne Wilson.
I'M thinking black, peacock green and chartreuse for
the first three colors.

Well if you ain't hook you are now. You got to see your handcrafted fly taken by a willing taker indeed. The bug has just begun now it will be fly rod and flies. Great job David.
