Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

A wild fighter! This one actually calmed down and opened her mouth to let me take the hook out....a rare gesture from this species.

We have Snakeheads here in MD now.  In the potomac river system.  Supposedly fantastic eating!  They look similar to this.  Problem is, the are invasive and a voracious predator.  Our DNR has made it Maryland law that if you catch one, YOU SHALL KILL AND REMOVE IT FROM THE WATER!  They are wiping out bass, bluegill, and anything else that swims from our ecosystem.  I dont have an outboard for my boat yet, but next year......

The bowfin is pretty much reviled throughout its range.
There is a small cottage industry in LA around its roe, however. There have been some attempts to expand that market, but I believe the results have been
meager, at best.

Choupique is a new one on me Scruff! Here we call them Bowfin or Blackfish. Down in Georgia they dislike this species very much and call them "Mudfish".

These go by a lot of names, like "mud fish" or "grinnel." Some are also not suitable for a family forum!
But, my favorite name for the prehistoric 'amia calva' has to be the Cajun, "choupique."
What a ring that has - "choupique!"
