The other lure I will be tossing in place of the 'Krocodile' are 'Kastmasters.' Maybe more shad are in the offing.

Thanks, Jeff!

More than likely, that shad probably was excited by the flash of that spoon and might have tried to "hook-up" with it, which it actually, literally did!  I get shad like that every once in a while on small chrome and blue Kastmasters.

I know Leo, right? I was a little surprised to see it. It was mostly snagged, but it had one of the hooks actually in the mouth.

The Krocodile DOES cast well, John - it is officially in the genre called 'casting spoons.' I got the thing in a lot of used baits off ebay, so this one lure probably cost $0.50, all in. I had never seen one before then, but I knew that the baitfish being fed upon looked something like one.

?! Woah?! As shad took on a spoon that is equivalent to its size? WOW.

I bet the yellow perch would tear this rig up too!!! Thanks for the post and pic.

I have caught Red Ears ,Pseeds and Largemouths on Krocodile spoons before .They cast like a bullet!

Thanks, John. I'm sure that the double hook doesn't tear up the fish's mouth... thus giving it a better chance for survival upon release. So far I haven't actually caught anything using it, though, so the jury is out on it's effectiveness.

As for the marking, "die # 3", I can only guess at it's intent. When I worked making plastic bottles, each mold was marked with an identifying code. This may be similar.

Here is an excerpt, describing the lure, from the Luhr-Jensen website:

".

"...The Krocodile® operates on a simple premise: big fish eat smaller fish. Year in and year out, the Krocodile® proves itself to be the most productive spoon ever built. It can be cast and retrieved, jigged over structure, or trolled. Choose the size that best mirrors available forage, then pick the perfect finish from an extensive palette."

I dropped a Pickerel last week using a single hooked  jig .Dont blame you for using a Double hook .I use the double hook to  replace Spinner trebles sometimes to save the lips on the fish I release . It's a good idea if your not keeping for the pan.

Die # 3 Dave?

Luhr-Jensen 'Krocodile' caught a shad.

The shad looked like it had been chomped by a predator and, indeed I had been casting to a huge swirl off shore. The shad school in large groups, coming into the shallows in the cooler months. Of, course they are followed by predators. I'm certain the killer in question this day was a chain pickerel; whatever it was, it had been chasing the baitfish all over the cove and ripping them apart.

You'll note the treble hook has been changed to a double hook. The pickerel are savage when they strike and the hook may go deep into their mouths. Large trebles are the devil to get out of there, so I'm trying these smaller doubles in hopes of easier unhooking. So far, they work good on shad!
