Yes, Nathanael...this fish is indeed a huge trophy catch in every sense of the word. Comparable to huge bass, trout and muskies.

People just don't realize how rare and special trophy panfish are. Thanks for sharing such an exceptional catch!

Thanks guys!  He didn't realize how special of a catch it was until I explained (after I was done hyperventilating) that I've never seen an Mn gill this big before. He knows I fish and look for monster gills all the time, so once he realized how excited I was he came around....:)  In my experience of fishing BGs in this area of Mn, this fish would be equivalent to a 20 lb Northern or 12 lb walleye or 7 lb smallie....and probably more rare. It took thousands of blue gills caught to finally see one this big.....I could go on and on about how special this fish was and how grateful I am that my cousin got the thrill of this catch.....but I can stop, the picture says more then I ever could....

Tony- Not sure what "mottling" means but I did tweak the photo with a filter so it could be from that.....

That is a monstrous fish! Is there mottling on the cheek, or is it a function of the photo quality?
