Yeah, very interesting take on marketing there at penfishingrods...

I found their blaring, "Keep your drag loose!!" message annoying. I prefer NOT to run a fish ragged all over the lake on a loose drag as they suggest. This tactic too often gets the fish into tangles and snags. It also reduces the fishes odds of survival on catch and release. IMHO it's better to get the fish in quickly and as unstressed as possible. So their philosophy and mine are at odds.

On the plus side, the product itself seems robust enough - once you take this drag issue out of the equation. The price is reasonable, too, for what appears like a quality built product. It strikes me as a great rod for the truck, for backpackers, or kayak/ canoe anglers, etc.

I also like that they are a no-BS operation. They lost me, though, after I had to wade through their lectures about how I shouldn't be an idiot. "We'll tell you what's what, and you better pay attention," seems to be their motto.
According to them, "(sic)...we don't want or need your business if you have a problem with that."
Actually, that works out for both of us.

David - I agree about the site/company.  to be honest the main page gave me a headache to look at.  I got it for the purpose you mentioned - backpacking/kayak.  My son and I like to hike so I grabbed these as something light to pack.

I did not know about the drag and catching fish.  I learn something every I'm on this site.  thanks!

Thanks guys.

David (McScruff) -  It's a penrod extrememe.   I purchased it on-line http://penfishingrods.com/shop/index.php

I purchased this model for my son and I http://penfishingrods.com/shop/product_details.php?category_id=13&a....

I had it spooled with 2lb test.  There are videos on the site showing people catching much bigger fish than this. I think I might spool it with 4lb test next.  the directions and website state to keep the drag loose than you can catch anything with it.

Take care

If your pocket rod will handle that, please tell us the name and where you got it!
