Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Bullys Bluegill Spider

Olive chenille
Olive legs

VARIATIONS
- The left one has the traditional leg arrangement, and is dressed "plain Jane."

The right has legs tied on top, and is gussied up with peacock sword wing and orange head.

Lead wire wrapped to the hook bend, of course, so the BB Spider sinks butt first and those legs wave around seductively.

Yeah Carl, that's the idea.
I dunno, I did a bad job of tying them last year, so never really fished them.
This season, I've improved the tying end of things, and gotten all the crummy ones out of the box.
I'll give em a toss this Spring.

looks good David;;  I have made quite a few of these in the past;; gave them all away to!!  the theory of it sinking hook first drives the gills crazy!!

You think they look alright?
I finally got the details worked out. It's trickier to get right than it first appears...

Now there's a point not mentioned much.
The rubber is very wiggly - nothing really duplicates it.
With these, the sink is the key. As the fly sinks at it carefully measured rate, the legs flutter and flap around. Very active.

Rubber legs get twisted around on false casts so when you land your cast and they unwind on the water it is a very effective subtle twitch that can't be duplicated with rod twitches , I don't think  . Fish rise to that motion for sure!

And John, thanks.
They're a proven design, so no reinventing the wheel with them.

I'm going full on the Byrd Method this coming season and the flies are going to meet certain
Imposed criteria.
So I cull and retie a lot. These were formerly some 'frankenfly' culls from my box.

I know what you mean Scruffy, if I hadn't been so busy since Thanksgiving I would have been making a few floats. I have a glut of them now but that won't stop me now that the rush is over I'll start up again.
