i think i figured out what this fish had to deal with, i was looking around some other fishing web sites, one about catfish was some guys in my area.  talked about getting blue gill, sunfish and other small types. then they chop off the tail fins and use them as live bait for cats. i guess the lack of fins makes them easy targets for big fish.  the more i look at whats left of his tail it looks like sharp fast cut not another animal. i think this guy was about to be used for catfish bait and must have some how slipped back in the water.

i almost brought him home to cook but i tossed him back then when he came back again i knew he had plenty of fight left in him so i put him back again.going to that spot in the am i wonder if he will come back a third time. will the tail fins ever grow back ? id never seen anything like it.

I had a similar incident happen to me a few weeks ago. Caught a Largemouth with a damaged dorsal fin. Ten minutes later, he strikes again. Exact same fish.

got into a few blue gill and green sunfish today. i wouldnt believe any one if they told me. i got a good tug on the line then just sort of dead weight. i thought oh no another little turtle must be on the hook. i pulled in a gsf missing 3/4 tail! i guess thats why he didnt try to fight much he lost a good chunk of his tail fin so not much of a swimmer. he looked beat up, jaw was a bit tore up and had a couple hook holes. i tossed him back. felt a little bad for him i figured a snapping turtle must have got a hold of him or something and figured he couldnt survive long missing most of his wheels. an hour later no lie exact same fish back on the hook 20 yards down the creek. i couldnt fathom him coming back for more esp in the shape he was. the second time i took this picture. several times in the past ive felt like a fished look just like one i got earlier but this guy with the jaw messed up and missing most of the tail couldnt have a twin! i put him back again, figured if he had the nerve to go after my hook twice in a row he had plenty of strength to make it in the creek a while longer.
