have seen the new medalist reels mike.but i want to put something from the era on the phillipson.it was made in 63 or 64.just bought an old scientific anglers reel for my carp rod.was surprised to learn they were made in england by hardy.got the reel for 20 bucks.good job on saving the bamboo rod.i have lots of newer gear and some of it is great stuff but at this point in my life i want to use stuff made in america when it ment something to be made in america.

I have an old bamboo rod (6wt) that was refinished with the original hardware. I put a Medalist 1494AK (China) and a Cortland Sylk wf6f line on it. Looks good and casts great. Have you seen the new Medalist reels? The new click/pawl 5/6 is tempting.

Jim;; for what its worth;; i changed all of my fly line to; super fly line;;;; cost about 20 dollars;; and to me; beats courtland hands down !  casts great;; no memory coils;; acts like a higher price line

not sure john ,there are so many different models of these.just wanted a vintage reel for my vintage rod.but will definately buy modern fly line, good fly line.this reel has areally good simple drag on it.my research says the phillipson rod tho only a 6wt will throw bass bugs nicely with good line.

thanks john, they are bullet proof.this one had really old line on it.works great.had to convert it to left hand retrieve.dont know why most of them are set up to use your right hand.if you flyfish righty like i do and most people do ,reeling with the right hand makes no sense.gotta clean it up and grease it.it is smooth as silk as it sits.gonna go on one of these old glass rods i picked up this winter.
