Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

#rd attempt getting closer to where I want to be except I got in a hurry that's a no no and cut off one of his legs in the trimming process. Woven body brown and olive with olive dubbing and mono eyes need to be a size smaller. Legs and tail are goose biots.

From what I've seen, the thorax usually is plastic covered. This often extends to the head, too, at least wrapped over the eyes.
I like to see something that stimulates a wing case, which is why I use brown or grey plastic film. I have some damsel nymphs that are all natural materials, and these are prominent. Interestingly, they don't have actual legs. They employ fine
Hackle on the bottom side to give the perception of legs.

I don't know what Jim was talking about the thorax or abdomen or both. I'm still playing around with it so there will be more. Like I said the eye's are one size to large and I love the painting of them so if I don't find me some smaller green ones the next ones you see might very well be painted green.

Hey Dick,b you could paint the eyes green with some enamel. The little bottles
used by plastic modelers would do fine.
For stretch film, my first thought was heavy weight Saran Wrap.

Thanks Jim the eyes are a little big and I should have used green but don't have any at the time. I don't know what you mean shrink wrap.

Dick and Jim, I have a pattern for an ALL TUBING nymph fly. It is a .pdf file, though, so just Google this.....

"Tying the JD Damsel Nymph"

The only traditional thing on it is emu feather quills, to simulate legs.

Jim I was in hobby lobby yesterday and couldn't find what I wanted and didn't see the tubing or I'd of got that for sure.

It looks a LOT better on the computer than on my cellphone. Thumbs up, Jedi Dick! Really tidy looking!

Jim Cosgrove - THANKS for the idea of plastic wrapping! Ive grown to be a big fan of dubbing, thanks to Tooty. Most nymph patterns I see, at least the classic ones, have dubbed bodies - and we know they catch fish. But I can see where the plastic "shell" adds a nice touch of realism.

sorry DICK,meant to start with i like the fly, really like the eyes, gives it that alien look that the live nymphs have.you could over wrap the body with some clear shrink wrap cut intto strips.very stretchy and thin.

Comment by jim cosgrove on October 12, 2013 at 4:30pm

a good boby material is that stretchy plastic you find in the bead section at the craft stores, comes in colors and clear.some is flat and some is like a micro tubing that lays flat with tension on it.i believe the fly tying brand is called larva lace.never liked yarn as a body material, just never found any that looks "buggy"enough.i like dubbing with a wire rib.but dubbing has always been a chore for me.
