Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This is a brackish water species, which propels itself mostly with its pectoral fins. Biggest I've seen is about 6". They make awesome bait for Stripers ;)
Pretty though, huh ?

Thanks for the reply Fish Chris .I've  always described "Perch" by the roughness of the scales when rubbing my finger against the grain head to tail .I quess that doesn't fit the Biologists description though .Thanks for introducing this fish to me!

Thanks again guys  :)

Jeff, like I say, sometimes, the lavendar irredescence comes all the way down over the sides, and the marking gets even blacker ! They really are a pretty little fish :) But just out of curiosity > How small of a fish have you done taxidermy with ? This one was about 4".... biggest I ever saw was about 6".....

Hey John, the scales are about like those on a BG.

Oh and hey all, I forgot to tell you one other very interesting thing about these fish > they are live bearers ! Yes, they actually pop out perfectly formed little Tule Perch :)

Very cool !What's the range of this fish .I've never caught or seen one .Do they have "rough scales" like yellow and white Perch?

Being a "retired" fish taxidermist, I would love to paint one of these beautiful perch.  This is no doubt a fish in it's spawning coloration, look at all the colors!

Thanks guys  :)

BTW, sometimes with mature males, in full breeding colors, they get an irredescent lavender color that comes all the way down over their sides ! I think they are probably pretty common around here, but hard to catch, as they often bury so deep in the tulies....
