I hadn't picked up on the scale-tipping, Tony, but I did think to myself that this fish had characteristics of both sexes: the tallness that's usually more prominent in males, but the coloring mostly of a female, along with the smaller opercular as you noted.  Mainly, though, I just noticed it was a beast.
