A friend of mine caught one on a surface fly before, so you're right on that they are opportunistic. Funny thing is that if I through a cricket in the Redear would inspect for while but if I through a worm in bam instant reaction.

Redear are generally thought to feed primarily on, or near the bottom, but my largest one to date was caught on a surface popper tipped with a beemoth.... they are definitely opportunistic.

Were they spawning when this photo was taken, Anthony?
