Thanks all. It was a great outing using Tooty's classic rod. I love it, and will be sticking with the fiberglass in open water. I will not damage that wonderful collectible. I'll use my graphite in the abusive environment. I have got to try that slingshot technique though.

@ JB: I made my last mistake for wearing shorts in October for mountainous water bodies. Never again.  Indeed, the temperature was not something to challenge likely.

@John, you're smacked on! The species stocked by DFW is Salmo Salmo trutta. I had the pleasure in working side-by-side with one of the brownie fishery that stock our local waters. I also had a pleasure in getting bitten by a few of them while inspecting and feedding them. I had a chance to bite back after they were stocked. They were also found in a few estuaries that we managed to get to, and fished in our float tubes. We failed to get to these wonderful estuaries by boats, so, an hour worth of hiking and prepping to get to these sacred estuaries were well worth it. To our amazement, we caught a few brown in these saline estuary environment. And the glorious thing is, they were tagged as fresh water stockers. Our jaws were literally dropped to the floor.

Nice brownie Leo. It was the case of the antique (Tootie) getting you the antique (Wonder Rod) to catch a great looking fish. Sometime antiques are a good things right Tooty.

Great catch,Leo!!! That one had to be a blast on a Wonderod.

Could be a landlocked Salmon not a Brown Leo.I've had a confusion about that before .What do ya think?Either way ,great fish and kudos to you for the catch .The star like spots and forked tail are a Landlocked trait and the round spots aand squared  tail is a  BR trait.Check the Vomerine teeth .(hopefully you dont have to dig through the garbage!)

Adult Salmon & Brown Trout

Here’s what you need to know:

The more obvious differences between adult salmon and brown trout may be found in the head and tail areas. Knowing them may help the angler release a fish more quickly. When in doubt about identifying adult salmon and brown trout, play it safe and release the fish unharmed.

Atlantic Salmon F.psd SalmonMouth.tif
  • Caudal fin may be slightly forked
  • Caudal peduncle is narrow and tapered
  • dipose fin is grey to olive—never orange
  • Maxillary usually extends to rear edge of eye or slightly beyond
  • Vomerine teeth

Small and arranged in a single row along a raised shaft on the roof of the mouth.

Brown Trout F.psd BrnTroutMouth.tif
  • Caudal fin is square and unforked
  • Caudal peduncle is thick and stocky
  • Adipose fin may be fringed or spotted with orange or red
  • Maxillary usually extends well past rear edge of eye
  • Vomerine teeth

Well developed and arranged in zig-zag rows along a raised shaft on the roof of the mouth.
