Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

20150821-Just took delivery of my 6-0’ Diawa Spinmatic UL spinning rod … fixed a Classic Shimano SpeedMaster UL spinning reel with 6-0# test braid to it and a slip float and pink waxie at the end. Set off to launch the kayak in Wixom Lake. 10 mins later im tieing into a tough battle with a huge panfish… halfway between the fish and I lies a bed of lilly pads. The fish becomes entangled and I release the anchor on the kayak. Luckily the wind drifts me into the fish and I dislodge a trophy Rock Bass. Shakily I measure the fish and it just runs short of 11.5 Master Angler size. Just 2 short years ago the state of Michigan changes the minimum size from 11.0 to 11.5. still a trophy in my books!!

might have time to check to see if these guys are homebodies like i believe them to be... got my waypoint marked for this trophy and since he was catch and released he might still be there.

Congrats Ken ,great fish! Last Rockies I caught were hanging by softball and bigger sized rocks .Got a smallmouth as a bonus , May 2014 ,slip floating a chartreuse ice jig tipped with a crawler chunk.

thanks Leo!... Rock Bass... one of my favorite species. usually catch them right along the SMB with the same tackle.

Excellent catch. Man, you're a lucky guy to go head-to-head with these.

thanks Carl! i was shaking so much after that it took at least 15 mins to get myself together. disappointed by just missing the certificate but still landing a trophy regardless.
