Mr. Sheehan,  I usually fish out of a float tube, but the water has been to cold for me to tube yet.  I  usually use a 6 foot rod spinning rod.   I just purchased a esp fishing rod, made by norseman outdoors.  It has a Tennessee graphite handle,  and come in power lite action, which is like medium lite action.    This rod is very sensitive, I like it very much.  I use the six foot rod because it is handier with a float tube.  This esp rod comes in sizes from 5 feet to 13 feet in ultra light rods.  I really enjoy using a float tube, I am hoping to get it out this week with the 80 degree weather we are supposed to get.  I cast out with jigs and  count down to the depth the fish are and reel in slowly.  I play around with fast i reel in, and see what the fish like.

I personally have mostly 5' rods and they cast far enough it keeps me away from the fish because I do fish clear water. But I'm fishing in shallow I always try to get on the outside weed break.

John, you have been having a great year so far. I like to see your posts, because you are always using something different(bait, method). Great looking fish you have been posting

Dilly,Mr Tabbert-Thanks for the comments . Dilly-I often use short rods and make short casts  from shore .What size rod are you using and how far are you casting? If i really have to get out away from shore I wanna use a boat but I do have an8' rod I've usd from shore from panfish  but need to wade and get awy from trees and shoreline brush that like to devour backcasts.Curious how you do it!

I like the swedish pimple also.  I usually horizontal jig fish using 1/32 and 1/16 oz jigs.  They do not go very far when it is windy, so I have been using the pimple and it works.  I think I caught more bass on it then gills, but the water is still a little cold.  Nice Gill.
