THANKS LARRY FOR REPOSTING THIS ONE AND IT'S HERE FOREVER NOW!!!!! OR UNTIL I DO THE FINAL BLUEGILL POLKA! SOMEONE ELSE will have to take the controls of the group and make it live on ......... Leo would be a good candidate as he is just a kid now and has a bbbbbbbbright future ahead of himself and looks at the old gear as I do........
LEO I AGREE WITH YA 100% and couldn't have said it better myself. Techno wizardry has it's place and has made tremedous strides in reels in the past 20 years and I use modern spinning reels myself.
Will anyone today associate the modern Shimano's , Diawa's, and all the rest with past classics like the MITCHELL 300, OLD ALCEDO REELS MADE IN ITALY, OR VINTAGE DAM'S made in Germany? No I doubt it . But that is not the point as to why modern stuff is better , in some regards, it's as you said earlier in a post . It's out of respect and reverence for the pioneers of tackle ........... question begs to be asked WHO IS GOING TO CARRY THE BANNER WHEN US OLD GEEZERS ARE GONE? GUESS it will be up to kids like you LEO and in my opinion it couldn't be in anyones better hands than yours.............
LARRY, TTTTTTTTTTTTTHANKS AND WELCOME TO THIS GROUP AND EEEEEEEEEEAGERLY AWAIT YOUR INPUT!! CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE STORIES AND WELCOME AGAIN!
Well said.
We all need to learn to use the old simple tech before we can learn to use the high tech. It's not the high tech that teaches us to master the arts, but the old tech teaching us to refine our skills that will yield the greatest results.
Some of the younger folks who live in the more traditional, simplier life away from the urban jungles are the truly blessed ones. They may dream of having the high tech of modern days, and the fancy gears that could bring home the trophy. However, living next to the open waters, using simple tech, learning about mother nature, the creatures, the ins and outs of the living and non-livings, that's a blessing..not a curse.
I wish I could live a simple life far away from this crazy world. However, we have to balance a life that mix the modern days with the traditional simple living. It's extremely hard, but we all have to try. Yet, when I find something of the past that bring back the simple living, and remind me of the old days from the periods that bring pleasures and joys, I will immerse myself in it. My kids are enjoying that themselves as well.
Don't know why but in the old days the folks I knew that had fish mounted , gills anyway , always had em in pairs! My uncle Dom Eitutis had a pair of gills mounted from LAKE OSAKIS in Minnesota and they hung on his wall till his passing , I never knew what happended to the pair. I used to ask him about them and he said they were so close in weight he needed to mount em both cause they looked like twins. They were a pound 14 and a pound 15 and at the time were the biggest gills I had ever seen or heard of for that matter.
Mr. Stein from the Hardware store had quite a few gills mounted , mostly from MInnesota also if memory serves correctly. When the store closed years after Mr. Stein was gone , his son took it over , all that stuff dissapeared along with dozens of NEW OLD STOCK SHAKESPEARE WONDERODS, ALL THE MOUNTED FISH, AAAAAAAAAAAALL THE VINTAGE NEW OLD STOCK LURES, and all the other tackle. I asked Bruce , the son, one time were it all went and he said down the basement. He also said no one wants that old stuff anymore and I won't throw it away so it's down there. I humbley asked if I could see the stuff and buy some maybe and Bruce said , well kid someday. Sadly he is gone now also and never talked to anyone else to find out were it all went . Ssssssssad to say the least.
TTTTTTTthousands of lures , rods, reels, nets, and all the gear we dream of now, at least the ones of us who remember the old stuff. You know what they say" WISHED I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW!!!!!" ALL of it would have been at OLE TOOTYS WAREHOUSE IN TROY GROVE!!!!! Some people say well things change and so should we, I SAY WHY? As Master Leo once said this stuff should be showed some respect and reverence for thing gone by . HOW RIGHT YOU WERE LEO ...........
HEY TIM ,
WWWWWWWWWWWELCOME TO THE GROUP AND HOPE YOU FIND SOME INTERESTING INFO AND DISCUSSIONS HERE, SORRY didn't see ya as a new member till now!
MASTER LEO, TTTTTTTTTTTHANKS MUCH for your comments here and will be starting a new forum subject soon! Finding kids that will listen is the first hurtle you overcame from a parents standpoint! Fortunately for me I had a real master at hunting influence me when I first came home from the CORPS. I always hung around with guys older than my self so I could learn from them. Never had that luxury much when It came to fishing however.
Old Mr. Stein was gone long before I wanted him to be and was a giller from wwwwwwwway back and owned the Ace Hdw. store in La Salle Illinois were I grew up. I listened many a Saturday after the paper route to his stories soaking it all up like a sponge!!!!! My uncle in Indiana was my fish mentor and taught me much early on about flys and gear and how to use it .
Will write more about him this winter if you remind me cause my memory isn't what it used to be buddy!!!!!!
You know what, doesn't matter what generation you belong to, from the old baby boomer eras, to the just-pop-out-of-mama eras, we all need to learn from one another. However, younger generations need to pay heavy attention to the older generations, where rich amount of wealth and knowledge to be learned from. Younger generations may know about the current statuses and technology, but they know swat about what's truly critical to properly manage their lives as they enter from the teenhood, to adulthood. This is why I teach my kids to listen to all older generations, and extract critical and useful info, starting with my wife and I.
It doesn't matter if you have the lastest fanciest gear, old and solid, or just using your own body parts as a bite detector (ie. your fingers/toes or your manhood), it's about knowing the waters, the animals, and gaining expert skills that will yield the catches.
I'm honored Tooty that you called me a master. I'm no master. I'm still a student, and far far far back along the trail following you vets as a greenhorn than a master of sort. I'm a geek, yes..a nerd, definitely..but a master..far from it.
Ya know folks that there are 16 pages of comments in this group and all the members of this group should make a note to visit here once in a while. The stories from Master Leo, Dick Tabberts old black and white photos and stories, Jeffrey Abneys stories and all the others need be read and cherished for what they are "LIFE HISTORY" AND the way things were back then. You know I'm the biggest offender on here when It comes to collecting or buying things I don't need . Just think of what we got by with for fishing gear in the old days.
Steel nuts for sinkers to fish in the back waters of rivers!!! Old solid glass or steel rods, ooooooooold fishing line for the level wind reels we used cause we couldn't afford new line or lures for that matter!!!! OOOOOOOOOOOh it was much simpler then and seems more exciting as I reflect back on it now.
The wonder of youth and all the questions to ask of some old guy we knew who would take the time to talk to a kid ! The old timers at the hardware stores that seemed to have all the answers for a kid that didn't know a rod from a reel and what to do with em. That was me and I suspect many others in this group.
The love of fishing is what was important and not the gear or what's new this week , or seemingly biweekly!!!! Ya I know I have way to many rods and that's why some are going to deserving people in my life. Can't use but one at a time anyway and let someone else have some fun and maybe , just maybe gain an appreciation for the good ole stuff............
WELCOME TO THE GROUP TIM AND you'll really like the stories I think. We talk about just about anything pertaining to the Good Ole Days in particular , but lots of stuff on tackle too .
