Hey Dick,
Nor have I met this young man from California, but you never know what the strange hand of fate will do in the future.
Yep few will have heard Leo's stories like you and I Dick and yes it is an HONOR to count him as a friend .
Leo is a man of many talents regardless of how he obtained them he is always sharing his knowledge with us and will help anybody out and for that he is high on my list and hopefully one day we can meet face to face although we have never meet personally I feel like we have he is a great person a great man and I am honored to know him.
I couldn't have said it any better David. Thank you for sharing Leo, great stories.
LEO YOUR NAME SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST !!!!! I'm sure none of the guys you mentioned here went threw what you did as a boy and you are a better man for it.
WE CAN ALL LEARN SOMETHING FROM SOMEONE ELSE or we'd all be writing books with all the answers in them to save someone else the trouble of learning lifes lessons the hard way , which is what you did.
I"m sure your perspective on life and it's outlook is the direct result of DR. NGUYEN having taught you some lessons early on by the way he lived his life, and what he stood for.
Inside all of us is someone yearning for the most basic of human desires, FREEDOM!
Fortunately in this country we already had someone sacrafice for our continued freedom on our behalves .
MY HAT IS OFF TO YOU OLE BUDDY AND KEEP THE FAITH because most of the rest of us here take our freedom for granted and just don't realize what others striving for it have to endure.

The soldiers that had remained behind were nothing more than angels. I still don't know how to this very day they were able to remain in the country after the invasion of southern China. However, I was very fortunate to have met a few of those soldiers.
What we call now pole canes are merely enhanced version of a basic wet bamboo stick that had been carefully selected to be used for the next 3 weeks before they dried up. 15ft of polynylon ropes from the old parachutes where nothing more than perfect fishing lines that last for years. The same extracted line can be used over and over again in so many different uses. Incredible materials.
One of the soldiers, with great knowledge of bamboo, taught me how to select the best young bamboo to cut. The tip must be young and thin enough to feel detection of light bite, yet, strong enough to pull the fish in. I couldn't understand this basic survival skill of selecting instant live wild fishing rods among the bamboo jungle until another soldier returned back with a carefully handcrafted bamboo rod from a Chinese martial arts master from the northern region of Vietnam. He then shown me how to use both of the bamboo rods with finesse, with the same effectiveness, using the single extracted strand of the polynylon rope. That was why I fell in love with bamboo rods.
Here's the killer. Forget the hooks made specifically for fishing. The soldiers were able to use anything to make a hook. I mean anything. Imagine this. One soldier actually use chicken bones to carve out hooks. Or, when he saw there were some pork bones, he favored that more to make stronger hooks. If there wasn't any bone, he focused on using some kind of hard wood to make floating hook, and mimic bugs that float at the top of the water. He would use local plant's fur to create ripples in the water. I could not understand how he managed to capture fish with such simple techniques. I always managed to capture fish using metallic materials to make hooks.
To this day, I'm still in awe of those who have mastered the basic essential materials by crafting what ever is available. This is why I dedicated myself to learn, learn, and learn some more from all walks of life, and all masters that mastered the simplicity of life.
Tooty, you, Kent, Bruce, Tony, Walt, Jim, Jeffrey, Bill, and so many more I can create a long list of (including the young generations like Jacob), I'm always honored to learn from, and experienced the acquired knowledge and wisdom from each of their life. Truly humbling and honored.
HEY EVERYONE HOW ABOUT SOME OPINIONS HERE!!! WHEN I was just a young kid I"d dream about catching some big fish on artificial baits and never dreamed I'd have been successful to level I have achieved.
When I bought my first fly rod I thought I'd one day catch some great fish with it and Old Mr. Stein used to encourage me every week after the paper route to bring in some fish so he could see em. I used to call him MR. Ace , short for Mr. Ace Hardware . That was before I realized that not everone who Ran an Ace Hardware store wasn't called Ace.!!!!LOLLLLLLLLLLLL.
OH well Mr. Stein was a fine old gentleman and used to fish Pelican lake in Minnesota every year and bring back llllllloads of gills and crappies. I'd see him when he'd be recently returned from a trip up there and he'd say, YA SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE KID WITH YOUR FLY ROD!!!! OF COURSE he is gone now but his memory lives on and if the good lord see's fit to leave me around here another year I might make it up there and see what I missed as a kid.
yep Leo I couldn't have said welcome to Kent and the others who recently joined any better than you have. Leo how about some stories of your youth when those soldiers gave you some gear!
Greetings Kent. It's a major honor to you have your presence among the BBG members. Can't believe how much Tooty has been prizing and glorifying your pond, containing such glorious catches. You can't believe how much we drool over the catch that Tooty has hauled from your pond. Jealous is not enough to describe it. Once again, welcome to the site, and a high honored rank among the BBG members.
HEY KENT,
GGGGGGGGGGGGLAD YOU JOINED THE BBG SITE AND MY GROUP. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING SOME POSTINGS FROM YOU!!!!
Ya know Charlie and Jacob that this group has alot of veteran fisherman on it and they have told many stories of the past days of fishing with family and friends. THE STORIES ARE PRICELESS IN MY OPINION !
Charlie I know you have some stories to relate if you would when time permits, DON'T BE A STRANGER HERE.
