A good way to find ponds 7 Replies

I'll admit, I'm lazy.  Why expend a lot of effort and gas trying to find ponds, when all you have to do is open up Google Earth, zoom in on your area, and start looking?I know that I've found a LOT…Continue

I am sooo ready to do this full time. Working is cramping my style...

With a tip from a colleague, I've picked up a new pond to fish this year. Second time there in the last two days yielded great results. The sun has been warming the waters, and all ice has melted away. Got skunked on Sunday, but Monday after work was a totally different story. It hit 60 degrees in the sun, so why not go fishing?! With my bucket of fathead minnows, tackle box and pole in hand, I decided to move around the perimeter and work as much of the bank as possible with the little time I had. After about 45 minutes I hit upon a nice little spot tucked in among some trees, scrub brush, weeds and reeds. Tough spot to cast from, but just enough room to operate. After a couple of casts I saw that bobber dive, so I set the hook and pulled in my first fish of February. A nice fat 13 inch black crappie. Man, my heart was pumping!! Good bye winter and hello spring!! That was at 4:51pm.   At 4:58pm I landed my second crappie...a little smaller but welcome none the less.  At 5:12pm I felt a thump on the line and pulled in my first bass of 2016. A nice fat 15 inch largemouth. When he broke the surface half way in to the bank I had the biggest shit eatin' grin you ever saw. Whew, that was fun!!  Not ten minutes later I had my second bass.  At 5:42 I pulled in another nice 11 inch crappie. Losing light quickly and trying to get as many casts out there as possible made for an exciting last few minutes of fishing. I got the last catch, a 10 inch crappie at 5:59pm.

The fountain at Henderson comes on every morning at exactly 9am. It doesn't seem to bother the fishing at all.

Thanks for letting me into this group. I love pond fishing...and do a lot of it. Ice isn't my thing, so unless I get lucky with a +50 degree day, I'm on the sidelines until Spring. I'm missing my old haunts and can't wait to get back out there. This is one of my Summer ponds in the early morning. Henderson Pond, Woodland Park, NJ. Nice place for small bass and crappies.

The Grassmere Ponds , and Gatun Pond I fish have real decent Pickerel 20 to 25 ".The Gills are not big usually up to 8 " or so maybe a few bigger but they have a special iridescent color and look to them I don't see from other waters . These are very old woodsy man made ponds that are not stocked anymore but have become "Natural" .

Thanks for the invite Tooty . The only ponds I find myself fishing are in Ringwood State park .The are not stocked ,except maybe Sally's pond . The four Grassmere ponds ,Gatun ,Brushwood and Weyble pond are out in the woods behind Skylands Manor in Ringwood NJ .I live in Ringwood . http://bigbluegill.com/photo/20-minute-walk-to-grassmere-ponds?cont...  http://bigbluegill.com/photo/20-minute-walk-to-grassmere-ponds-1?co...  http://bigbluegill.com/photo/20-minute-walk-to-grassmere-ponds-5/ne...
