Fishing is one of those activities that even with a million dollars worth of gear, you cannot guarantee success. Most of us have been out fished at some point by the guy with a cane pole and a hook. Fishing is like golf in that regard - You can't buy your way into being a good fisherman.

In the end, fishing equipment only needs to do a few things. The fact one can do well with very little proves this. Most of fishing success is not out at the hook end of the line. It is between the ears of the angler. Old Geezers know this.
