Learned on glass 6 Replies

You bet I used them. I learned on glass. That was all that was available besides the high dollar bamboo. My favorite rod was a little 6 1/2' Heddon 5wt. I started on a real cheap Shakespeare that I…Continue

Hey Steve I think I still have my Mitchell 301 I'll have to look around in the barn.

I still have my old Wonder Rod (spinning) that I bought back in 1967. Bought a Mitchell 301 reel to go with it. Still have both. Still use that rod/reel occassionally, but do not want to chance ruining either one of them. The still look good and function as they did brand new.

I also have 2 Wonder (fly) Rods. Used one this past spring, but hung it back on the wall, again not wanting to damage those rods.

Great one DIck and loved the old stories of days and gear gone by. Somehow I have managed to go back to the days of glass and glad to have done it and have managed over the years to re aquire the feel for the old glass touch.

My first rod was a hand me down wonder rod from Dad. I remember wishing for Saturdays that's when Dad loaded up the boat. He took me and a few of his friend and we Sat on Lake Erie. Dad dropped anchor and we started fishing. I remember him telling me drop your bait all the way to the bottom and reel it up 3 turns. Wow we caught the fish and the glass rod held true. I would feel that tap and set that hook with many time catching doubles. Before the rod I would have 20 foot of line hanging over board have the line in my thumb and forefinger feel the tap and yank the line as hard as I could and started pulling the line up by hand. Bottom line the old Shakespeare made life so much more manageable and I really got good at feeling them bite. Learned there were distinct bites or shuttle little pulls and when your line went slack. Caught lots of fish and the rod was an improvement of many more improvements to come.

Ya know Rick my first rod of any kind was a Wonderod also and bought at an Ace Hardware store with paper route money and was a maroon wrap which is called the Professional wrap by Shakespeare. That rod is gone now and been replaced by others many times over , but still have fond memories of it and the adventures we had when I was a kid 130 years ago!

HEY RICK still got that rod? What did you like about it the most?

Comment by Rick King on October 27, 2012 at 4:23pm

I have many  memorys of learning to tie rubber spider and learning to flyfish with my Shakspeare 8'5" white wonderod with brown wrapings. I know I started flyfishing with it when I was ten.

WELL GONNA START A DISCUSSION HERE and ask a question of all the members of my new group: who has some really fond memories of fishing with an old or new glass rod and why? I know you are out there hiding from view Leo !!!!!!
