Targeting Multi Species Panfish

In my location of New Jersey, panfish include a variety of Species. I enjoy a Multi species outing either fishing alone or with friends or Family members. Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Red Breasted Sunfish, Bullheads, pan sized Stream Trout, White and Yellow Perch, Crappie, a few Rock Bass, a few Green Sunfish is what I encounter. All are welcome to join and archive their techniques and Species List .

Thanks for the invite, John. Within minutes of my home here in PA, I can get into perch, bluegill, sunfish, rock bass, and crappie. I've been tying some jigs for them and I'll try to post some photos tomorrow. They are nothing fancy, but they are functional.

Green SF have always been incidental for me and brother Greg.  Learning to target them would be a difficult, or at least time consuming, study I should think. Would like to hear more about the characteristics of the Green Sunfish. I know them to be Aggressive and willing to hit big Lures with their Big Mouths when I encounter them. I have only caught about 4 in my Life and Greg 2 that I know of.

NJ classifies Green Sunfish as invasive, but I've never seen enough to consider them "TOO" prolific and hurting the fish balance. It's something I'd like to talk with about to a New Jersey Fish Biologist or Fish and Game representative though!Fishin' PLwSteve O

One of my unusual catches a few years ago: Here's a first for me; a 13" Crappie on a Honeysuckle berry I found on the ground. In the photo you can see the little berries i used on a32nd oz. orange jig head.No photo description available.

Glad you like McScruff!  The Hens were again more prolific and around 5-5.5" Trying to answer the question, ....at what temp does live Bait NOT become the only way to get Pannies to bite and be caught.

I told yall I was gonna look for this...

COSGROVE EZ FLY (2013)

TYING NOTES

Ultra chenille - singe the “hairy” ends with the flame from a cigarette lighter. Ultra chenille (super fine) is the only way to go for these. You can find plenty of it on ebay.

Poly yarn - helps it float and easier to see.

Hackle – just common types. Again, get it on ebay in the more agreeable, smaller quantities hobby tyers need.

Mine are on sz 14 hooks, tied to match whatever color the bugs in the area present. Just match the chenille and thread.

Angling Notes:

These are easy and cheap; not the prettiest, but they land soft and the fish suck em’ right down.

I like them, as we have had a ton of rain this year after several seasons of drought. Green slime algae has pretty much draped itself over everything under the water, so you have to stay at or just beneath the surface. I get as close to emergent weeds as I can with these. I find the bigger gills are more willing to come up to the surface than the little ones, if you get these flies near their favored cover. This is always near deep water, essentially, the deep water side of their weedy haunts. Seek out pockets and indentations on the edge of weedy areas and land these flies in and around them.

Today first I tried dragging bottom with a 1/4 oz Carl Hendrix Jig tipped with a Crawler piece. No one Home. Was thinking Bass White and Yellow Perch.  All small Gills today under a float 3'8" deep in 4-8 feet of water. Three Spikes on a #6 Aberdeen and Mealworms or Crawler piece on a #4 Aberdeen. 50 deg. WT at the NW incline /Inflow Pipe Spring Spot. 45 Minutes 1:00-1:45. Cold east wind in the face.45 deg air temp

“I'd like to see those flies you got 15 Gills on!”

meeee too!

I still have some Cosgrove mini-poppers, sent by Jim. That was some years back.

I was still fishing “redneck tenkara,” at that time: crappie pole and flies about which I knew nothing. Cos sent me those little, 1/4” poppers and I couldn’t keep the fish off them.

And I had never seen such tiny feathers! I still dont know how he made such tiny bodies, either.

I won’t fish them now because I might lose the danged things….

and as memory serves there were also some dinky disc spiders in the initial package, and somewhere in my files, I have a “Flies by Cosgrove” folder.

I’ll try to dig that out tonight
