Comment by 10.5" RES Sharon on September 27, 2010 at 5:39pm: My goals are flexible. I wanted to raise pretty bg, but realize that without predators, there will be way to many. So, most of them will be bait for the lake across the street. Some of the others will be put in my larger pond for bait. The ones that survive may be attractive enough to be selected to put back in the small pond for breeding purposes. I realize that this idea will take lots of tweeking and changes, and might not work at all. It's just an idea, not set in stone. It will be filled with the overflow from my larger pond. (very fine screen to keep fish from overflowing) I don't know what size the pond will be, when we get tired of digging, we will stop.

You do not want to add just any fish depending on those goals.

You want to grow fish to eat?

You want to grow bait to sell?

Will other fish be in it besides BG?

How big will the pond be?

Can other bodies of water get in the new pond?

Please let us know before you put fish in.

Any Bluegill I catch in my old pond that are spectacular in size, shape, or color will be transferred there to breed. If I have too many fry, the bottom will have no debris in it so we can drag a net. Sell the extra at the local bait shop. Hopefully.

These are tiplia frys that I use for bait. That why I stocked them. Still feed twice aday. Water temp been in the mid to low 80's but a front this week will cool that down.

Comment by 10.5" RES Sharon on September 27, 2010 at 8:41am: No, they are all assorted sizes, the largest is 6", although I did catch 1 7 1/2" bg in the pond last year. I keep trying to find him, as he should be big enough to eat, but can't. Although, if there's only one that size, I doubt I would eat it anyway. I feed them twice a day. The minnows are all gone, but there are lots of mosquito fish that the bg seem to ignore. The fish truck will be around again in Oct, and I will get some more minnows. I like having mosquito fish in there as this year there have been almost no mosquitos and last year, they were terrible. We are digging a new pond too, and I'm going to put coppernose in there.

How many fish are you catching? If you catch a lot of them and they are all the same size you may have too many and need to thin them out to get them to grow.

Plus are you still feeding the fish, that is the fastest way to get them to grow but not sure how much you can do for them this late in the year.

They will grow on naturally food like minnows etc. but just takes longer than if you supplement or replace with feed.

Just keep up what you are doing and starting next spring you can feed more if you want and this time next year you should have some nice 8-10 fish, but you may want to start eating some of the 6-7 inchers next year and the bass will take care of the smaller ones for you.

I am in the same boat as well, I just started feeding mine about a month ago and already see some change, but I think I can pull some out this time next year to eat, plus I plan to find someone that needs catfish bait next year to get rid of as many GSF as I can.

May even try to work a deal with the bait man to swap some GSF for FHM or GSH.
