Do you love big bluegill?
I have a 5 acre pond with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. I was thinking about getting a protein based food called Aquafeed to feed the fish in order to keep them fat and healthy. Is this a good…Continue

Finally pulled out some CC from my pond, took my 7 year old daughter and she had a blast. We were only able to get 5 of them but they were 1.08 - 1.83 pounds. Not as big as I thought they would be after 20 months but with the amount of fish in the pond I can not complain plus this size is really good to eat.
Plus it made 2 meals for us (we had a few small GSF to go with them, they are tasty as well) which had to be kept as my daughter wants to catch dinner everytime we go.
Very cool - glad I was able to help! You might leave a few of them for the grass shrimp, maybe 5% of the pond. But generally fewer weeds is better than more weeds for big bluegill. I would say get them all out if you didn't have grass shrimp in the pond.
Ok Walt Your advice was dead on, which I didn't see until I started raking out the pond weed. a lot of the weeds towards the bottom are dying away. For the past two days i have exhausted myself raking out weeds. I didn't realize that they had gotten so dense. I'm going to hit it 2 more times and the re fertilize on tomorrow as I am due to fertilize again. Thanks again
Yeah, if you have some areas of the pond that are less than a foot deep it will be difficult to keep the weeds off them unless you start fertilizing early in the year, probably February for you.
That's cool that you have shrimp and crawfish both in the pond. Do you have lots of small bass? That's key to growing really big bluegill. The small bass keep the bluegill thinned out so the ones that live have more to eat due to less competition. One other thing you can do is to release the larger bluegill, especially the males, and keep the ones under 8" and the females when you want fish. That will allow some to grow to trophy size.
