That what I'm hoping too. They're small now this might get them started. I understand if they don't eat the feed they will eat what ever feeding on the feed and so will start hitting it too. Hope so. The feed cheeper them the FHM lol. I think with the right feed and as they get bigger they'll come around. You know if bass got to be 50pounds you won't want to swim with them.lol When you see a little 7" bass hit a 3" minnow at one hit you know they are bad to the bone.

Just out of curiousity. LMB rarely eat pellets from what I understand, unless they're specifically trained to do so. But they very well may be eating those eating the pellets. ;)

I buy them by the pound most the time 5 pounds at a time. I know that until the bluegills get bigger the bass will eat them up. I'll put 4 pounds in the pond and the other pound in my 40 gallon fish tank. Then when the kids come over, or mawma ain't got me doing some honey-do. I'll take a few bait a hock and then we're on. A small little zipo reel and a bobber and a 5 year old with a minnow on her hock and just set back and wait. That 10" bass hit her hook and we're on. PAWPAW I GOT ONE roflmao can't get know better. You asked about the bass eatting the feed. That a good question. If the rain will stop I'llcheck them out.

Just remember, Rick, and I'm sure you know this, that FHM will not "take hold" in your pond. They will be eradicated eventually if you stop stocking them yourself. But they are a nice head start to your forage base, and to keep the pressure off the BG.

We have a single great blue heron that has been visiting our farm since as long as I can remember. I don't think a single bird can do much damage to a fish population. Plus, I don't think I have it in me to end him. He spooks easily so if anyone's around he won't be.

To cure the crane problem, I dug out the small pond with sheer banks. The bank drops off to four or five feet. Can't do anything about them "fishing" from shore, but it does stop them from wading. Fortunate I have a couple of dogs that chase them, so not a whole lot of problem. They do fish, my fishing pond, and the Great Blue Heron is almost a pet now. haha

Like I've been posting that I add the FHM too ( A lot )
I don't think you can added to many. After my last stocking there was a bunch of leaves at one one of my pond. I got the rake and started to dip them out. And man the FHM we everywhere> I got back on pond bass and they told me that were they lay and hatch eggs.
So at 300 FHM per ld at 5lbs per month x 5 months I think I go and will be having a good supply of FHM.
The cotton seed cakes sound like some thing to watch keep us up dated. As for a minnow pond that might just be my next task. As if I need another one.
Oh what about the Cranes? any one have problem with them? Seem like I see one every now and then coming up to the pond. Ran them off with a blast from my 410.
can't shoot them. YA RIGHT

That's very cool Billy. I too am planning on a forage/siltation "pond".

In addition to my fishing pond I have a smaller round pond about fifty feet across, maybe five feet deep, and full of lilly pads. I stocked it with ten pounds of FHM, hoping they would breed. I went out and dipped my dip net in the pond and came out with about a hundred FHM, Looks like they are breeding and hoping it will stay stocked enough to feed my fishing pond year round. Upon the advice of an old timer I picked up some cotton seed cakes at the feed store and dropped one in this pond. I was amazed that in no time you couldn't see the cake at all for all the FHM on it. Might have stumbled onto something, will let you know later.

My opinion wouldn't be an expert one for that question. Might want to run that one by Bruce or Walt or just post the question on PB. I've always believed in harvesting the smaller ones and letting the bigger ones swim to give yourself bigger angling opps in the future. But your goal is different. You want them to multiply, so maybe your strategy is a good one. I'd want an expert's opinion though. Doesn't take much to get a pond the size of ours to get out of whack.

What I've been asking is the cut off on the size of bass to keep ing the pond. (On down the road, next year) I want to lease some of the big bass but the same time will need to keep the smaller one to keep the count up. Pond Boss noted a 12 to 14" bass to be removed when managing the fish stock. There local ponds that I'll move them too and I'll grill the rest. With this scale it should give me a few 16" and up trophy size bass and a good stock of 8 to 11 bass for the kids and to maintain the leave of the bass need to keep the gills in count. The gills are another question I'll remove all the large male I catch and keep the female HBG until the straight BGS start to be the main type of gills. As of now I'm looking at removing as needed gill 8 to 10" what your opinion?
