Bass in pond. Minnows in pond. Bluegills in pond. Found out my hybrid BG were a bad idea, but there they are. Also have coppernose, redear, and bluegills.

Picking up a few bass for my little pond today. Hope it works out. Half the experts say not to put bass in a pond under 1 acre, half say the bluegill can't be managed by catfish alone. We'll see, I can always eat them, lol

This is another straigh gill. i stocked ( I though ) 400 hybird. But I'm finding tons of these fish. which is nice. Spring is here in south Texas and fish are jullping in the pond. Feeding has gone to three times aday. Love watching them pop the water after the feed. Check the pond and I'm seeing tons of minnows. I think adding all the flathead that they too are taking hold in the pond.

I have been reading everything I can about setting up a small pond. Which fish type, how many and what size. Like any South Texas Boy I’d love to catch those 8 to 10 pound bass. BUT setting up this pond I knew that my grandbabies on the little light fishing pole wouldn’t be able to land them and would get burned out not getting the action they want. They’ll fish for about 10 min. if nothing happening they’re gone to other thing.
So I need to set it up with a lot of small fish. In my research I found that a pond my size could carry 50 pounds of bass. So if I take out all the big bass over a Pound and a haft I could keep about 35 to 40 small 1 pound bass in my pound. A young bass under or at a pound would also be more likely to strike at any thing and have not yet become hook shy.
My hybrid blue gills have the big mouth and the aggressiveness of the sunfish. I also have added straight blue gills to try and make up for the 90 % male offspring of the hybrid. Again I have check and a 1 acre pond can support 300 to 400 grills.
With this number I can carry forge fish for the bass and I will take all gills under 8” from the pond which will leave nice 9, 10 and 11” gills just at a pound for my kids to catch.
Right now I’m at 10 to 11” bass and 5 to 6” gills. Now that the warmer weather I hope to see the growth increases by the end of summer to 13 to 14” bass and 8 to 9” gills with a bunch of pebble feeding and the FHM.
Small bass and big gills and a young group of fisherman, I hope to see a lot smiles and fish stories and memories.

Rick, I'm very interested in how you manage your "kid-friendly" pond. I plan on possibly doing something like this in the future, after my main pond is done. Stocking it will tons of little bass for the kids to catch, and hopefully getting some monster BG in the process. Keep coming with the updates.

catching 4 to 5 of these in the evening when I get home. Was catching 10" to 11" bass all the time. Now it 5 to 6 of each. I'm using flathead minnows on the red "C" hook. What I need to do now is give them all tatoos so I can start see if I'm catch 5 firh are the same one five times.
