Well, the die has been cast, fella's. I was prowling around on SC Kayak Fishing last night when I saw a Hobie Outback Hank Parker fishing yak for sale in my hometown.
It is complete as issued, in about 90-95%. It has a dolly, the original paddle - even the plastic bags that the accessories came in are with it. Cost? $600.
I got it. I hadnt planned to go there, but at half of my original budget, well... It offers more than the junk I DONT want - at the same price.
I'm now in the Hobie Plastic Navy.
david , i have a wilderness tarpon sot and it seems to do everything that i need it to do ,but when i bought it i did not know about nucanoe,if i did i would have checked into them.
That;s quite a drive to go fishing Dink. I remember those days of going to "the River" (Colorado) when living in Southern California. 5 hours from east Los Angeles county. But those were good times and well worth it. Spent many days below Parker Dam having the time of my life.
The NuCanoe handles much like a canoe David in that it sits up, has a floor like a canoe. My older version does not have the scupper holes that most SOT's have in them. With the gel filled Captain's seat, it is just comfortable as most other boats. NuCanoe's new boat, Frontier has scupper hole for water drainage. Jackson Kayak has come out with a new boat, the Cuda that sits pretty high and seams to have a pretty comfortable seat. Would like to try one myself.
A nice website for yak fishing, by a pretty nice guy. Check out "Manpowered fishing" -
For the record, there are a few SOT's I do fancy...
a. Ocean Trident 13.
b. Jackson Coosa/Elite
Anyone with experience in these boats?
For the record, the only other SOT I fancy is the Ocean Trident 13. Anyone with experience on this boat?
steve i mostly fish at saquaro lake ,it is the closes lake for nice gills ,i have to drive 80 mile each way. but when they are biting it is well worth the drive
@ Tim - you said, "The Native is what I have - several of my friends have the Commander. I would order the Native."
The Commander was created as a response to the Ultimate, most notably adding variable height seating. Some have cvalled it a 2nd generation hybrid. Personally, I lean towards the Native; I like it's comfortable seat and the retract skeg. At the same time, accessories for it are pricey.
Can you give some reasons why you like it better over the Commander?
@ Steve - actually, there are very few hybrids. A distant second choice would be one of only a couple SOT's, those with a fairly deep cockpit. Bottom line, I prefer the more boat-like manners of a yakanoe.
This is going to be tough, I think....
You don't see many used NuCanoes for sale David. They make for a stable and comfortable fishing platform. The room insde the boat is what makes all the difference. The Native WaterCraft Ultimate is a very popular boat as is the Commander. I've tried the Ultimate, but it never suited me. I could never get the boat to track and paddle straight. Just me. I tested boats for over two years. Settled on the NuCanoe because of the comfort, space and easy to fly fish from. But every person has their own needs when fishing. ALWAYS try BEFORE you buy. There are a lot of good boats out there. Wenonah has a little boat called the Fusion that has always interested me also. I have a float tube, personal pontoon boat, the NuCanoe and 16' John boat. While they all have their place and I enjoy them all, I like the NuCanoe best. Like Jeff Soto, might be gettin rid of the John boat. Just do not use it any more, tired of paying taxes and registration fees for it. Good luck David in finding the water craft to take you fishing.
