they are a streamer dick,so sub surface.i am sure they can be weighted to get em down..i have seen a very large saltwater version called the mangrove muddler.i think the deer hair head helps it swim thru snags.i have a few muddlers but they are in my archive box.tied by a pro tyer who had a shop in my area.lots of info online of how to tie one and the 100s of variations

Allen on the muddle when its fished is the hook pointed up or down. Never seen one let alone fished one before just a little curious. I guess I'm seeing more possibilities using parts of that pattern. Also do they sink or float I thought deer hair floated again curious.

I like my hooks up just for the purpose of less snags. I'm sure there are reasons for tying the hooks down and useful in different scenario's but for the most part for me the hooks will be down.

Why are so many flies tied with the hook down? With the success that jigs get at hook ups would think more flies would be tied with the hook up? I know that Dick Tabbert ties quite a few of his creations with the hook up.

Have never tied anything before but did just recently buy a beginners kit. hope to get at it later this year.

I remember reading the comment from Rex and I have found fewer problems with wind knots myself. I also have found that the few that I get in the actual leader are much easier to remove. Of course any that appear in the tippet are still in most cases impossible to get out and a tippet replacement is in order. I am using a homemade leader and it is only about 5' long.

Rex, a few months ago you responded to my comment that a furreled leaders helps me to avoid tangles and wind knots.  You ssaid that you experienced just the opposite.  Well, in the interim I purchaseed furled leaders for my smaller rods - 6 and 5 weight rods.  You are absolutley correct.  I had more wind knots with the furlled leader.  I quess it depends on the size of the line/rod?  what say you?

Yes - Mike ,I think it was Rex that talked about latex glove.

I think it was a little more pliable because I used head cement on it and wrapped it wet.
