Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Did a little conventional fishing tonight, then broke out the fly rod.  Caught a number of very nice blue gills on a chartreuse Wooly Bugger.  Then switched to a Dave's Hopper and caught even more.  Mixed in a couple of small largemouth bass as well.  Overall, great night - the fly rod, weather, and company all made for a fantastic night!

Very nice. Night time fishing on a wooly, and you nailed them? Must be an active water. Any UV flashabou or attracting color beside chartreuse from tip to end?

We fished from 6:45pm until it was getting dark (around 9:15 or so).  I didn't use anything except the chartreuse WB and Dave's Hopper, fly line to 10 feet of 4 lb tippet to fly.  Nothing else.

It was a private pond that is fished quite a bit, but certainly not "over-fished".

Truly a great night of fly-fishing for 'gills.

Leo - thanks for your reply!

Thanks for the info Powder

Nice. I'm familiar with the Woolly Bugger not Daves Hopper...
Have to look that one up
Good bit of detail, thanks.

Threw two different flies from 5- 6 pm today .A Mickey Finn (Bucktail Streamer ) and a Chartruese Popper .Nothing on the Streamer a small Female and small Male on the popper .Backhand casting came in handy and the sidearm cast too.Casting is getting better and I didn't break off anything but the catching wasn't in high gear .There's always tomorrow.

Glad you had a good time. I've been having a lot of luck with wooly buggers and small (size 12-14) streamers (clouser minnows, mickey finns, and some that I don't know their name - they are that old...)

Also been having great luck with crickets / hoppers (dave's hopper) when there's no wind.  If enough there's breeze to take away the "glass look", I can't get any 'gills to bite on the surface.  Still a blast though!

Thanks for the info Powder River!
