Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

2012 is going to be my year. I am really pumped up about spring (even if it is mid winter). What I am asking is how many rods, and what kind do you take with you. And how do you have them rigged. I am trying to narrow things down to 4-5 rods, rigged for all types of gill fishing. Oh by the way, I will also take a couple poles along too.

That's funny we all do the same things. We all take rod and reels with some kind of bait then go out on the water. We set there minutes or hours and wait for some kind of jerk on the line. But ain't it great.......

True that! I like that thought. Most of us walk to the water's edge and fish and then a few get in a boat and drift past them or float on top of them all day. Sometimes they catch a fish.

I am getting woozy from looking at a picture of Gulp to the right in the recent posts bar.... eeeeehh *gulp*.

Slip floats are also called sliders as they slide up the line. This is the opposite of "fixed" floats where you clip it on or pinch it together with split shot holding it in place (or by using silicone sleeves to fix your float to the line in one position).

I know forever I called these the wrong term but rods and poles get confused by anglers. Poles have no reels and usually they don't have guides or multiple eyes. Once it has eyes on it it is a rod and once it has a reel on it is most likely a rod.

I know this won't clear up some confusion and we call them whatever we were told to call them.

So for Rod selection I would go with a 10 - 12' fast action float rod for fishing casting floats. If I am fishing a river, then I go with the 16' Bolognese rod.

For poles I have 6', 10', 12', 16', 20' and of course the old faithful 42' take-apart. What is my weapon of choice- well that is easy I much prefer the 6' pole and speed fishing because I can get the fish in a whole lot faster and it is much more fun on the short telescopic pole. That said, the workout of trying to fish fast on the 42' pole is incredible.

For most who don't understand that fishing is a sport, they never have fished.  : )

Thanks for the float's clarification Johnny.

I agree with you on the rod and pole terminology. I purposely use the pole holder since pole holder is a fixed hull or ground device that can support lengthy, and sometime heavy, setup. Rod holder, 95% out there, are designed for light weight, nothing longer than 7'. That's why sea faring boats have pole holders, which are supporters for ultra heavy gears. Rod holders, we should think them more along the line of fly fishing rod holding devices for inflatable float boats and pontoons. I have 6 of those..hahahaha.

My "short" UL & L spinning rods are 7'.  I also have 9', 10' and 12' UL spinning rods for use in specific circumstances.  On several lake I fish, the thermocline is at about 12' in the summer.  I am usually successful about a foot or so above the thermocline with a double jig rig fished vertically.  The 12' rod makes it fast & easy.

ya leo i was refering to a charlie bee slider
